Lake frozen again

Just got back from Etherow and was surprised to see the lakes both frozen over again, don't know why I should have been surprised really as it was down to -5 Friday night and -3 last night.
Still it was a ride out and we got rid of a few cards and collected another renewal fee.
The only people there trying to sail were Dave and Jeff and one of the newer guys Peter trying out his Huntsman which is pictured here.

Nice isn't it and just enough ice broken up to have a little sail.

Shows and Events

Check out the "Pages" on the left of the blog to see the listing of Events and Shows in the coming year.
There are events that most of you will like and coach trips highlighted that Mike has already arranged, he will be contacting you at meetings nearer the time for bookings and prices!.
I believe the last arranged trip Mike did was a great success and enjoyed by all, you can't make your own way and pay the entrance fee for these prices.

Don't forget its Club Night to-night and if you haven't renewed your membership its the last club night to do it to save yourself the postage before the old one runs out at the end of this month

Been in touch with Kath and Lawrence's operation went well though he will be in hospital a little while longer as he has quite a bit of pain in his back.

International Model Show RC Show

No No !  its not our International Model Boat Show, this one is in Pasadena , California.
Just thought you might like to see how the other half model, its not always bigger and better in the U.S. is it.
The Birchwood Show is as good as this and our own Lifeboat Show we had this last Summer was even better!.

Sick note

Just a short note to let you know that Lawrence (  last years commodore, for newer members ) is in hospital after having the operation on his hip that he'd been waiting for for some months. He didn't get the dreaded cancellation on the last minute, which must be awful.  Kath said the operation was a success, so you can't ask for better than that.

He will be in hospital for a few more days yet, so I know you will join Velda and I in wishing him a speedy recovery.  Pepe will certainly know what its all about after his operation last Saturday.

Etherow Mill

As there's not much going on at the lake this time of year I though you might like to see what the waterwheel at etherow mill would have looked like in days of old when it was a working mill.

This was one of  the drawings of the Etherow mill wheel that Bob Abell was shown by the caretaker!

Old drawings

Llanberis waterwheel

Some comments by Bob the Abell

The big wheel at Etherow was 50 feet diameter and 19 feet wide. built in 1839 and was called.....Big Lily
The wheel at Llanberis is 50 dia by about 6 feet wide and it`s surprising how little water it uses....about a bucketfull per blade!
The slate museum is well worth the visit.....next time the North Wales show is on?
BOB

You can still see the marking on the wall at the side of the mill at Etherow, what a whopper hey and thanks for the info and pictures Bob

The George

Coming to the lake from Marple you will pass The George seen on the left many many years ago (still there though and serve nice meals ) and the Mill in the background !. I don't think Bob is any of the walkers in the parade he's only my age !

None but the brave

Had a good Club meeting last night and managed to get quite a lot of renewals handed out, and welcome to four NEW members!
The new Exhibition Sec spoke about his program for the coming year and said he hoped for a good response to the program to put the club back on the map. The Social Sec has already booked three coach outings for the 2011 season and will be giving out details nearer the time.
Went to the lake to-day to see if there was anyone there to give their renewal forms to, got another four handed out, so the ones not given out by hand will be now be going in the post .
Don't forget your renewal is due on the 31st January so please send your forms back promptly.
The members that have paid up to now will receive their membership cards at the next club meeting to save on postage
Whilst there to-day captured some hardy sailors racing their "J" Class yachts
Hardy sailors
Their off
So after a chat ,a bit of lunch and a walk round the lake with Pepe it was home to the fire !!
Surprisingly the big lake is still frozen at the top half though the weather seemed quite mild.

First Club night of the new year

Don't forget you guys (and gals) its the first club night of the new year to-morrow
12th January 8-00pm
Velda the secretary will be there with your renewal forms, why pay postage sending your form back when you can pay on the night so bring your wallets and crack them open.

NO NO that's not a butterfly its a Moth !!  but don't worry we will bring plenty of bug spray to keep them down.

Come along and check out the ideas and outings the committee have lined up for you in the coming year, but remember a club is only as good as its members.

Ice gone off lake

Good news for all you hardy sailors! " the ice has gone "
the bad news is its still very cold at the lake as you can see from the picture I took yesterday

If the picture isn't up to standard Bob its because my hands were shaking with the cold, that's my story and I'm sticking to it.
Pictured is Jeff and in the background is Dave's "J" class  ( he was in the clubhouse thawing out) and in the foreground is "Eskimo Nell" your Secretary , hoping to catch a few members with their wallets open for renewals!. The only ones brave or is that daft enough to venture out to the lake this weather.

On a lighter note

A lad comes home from school and excitedly tells his dad that
he had a part in the school play and he was playing a man who had been
married for 25 years. The dad says, "Never mind son, maybe next year
you'll get a speaking part." !!!
Before all you sexists out there shout at me, I was sent this by a lady with a good sense of humour.

password

Hello
Glad to see we are getting some info on  your web site about the club .
Is it possible to get my user name and  password for the Etherow web site as I have forgotten them (something to do with age I am lead to believe)
regards Geoff Batson (member No 156)

Sorry Geoff but we have no jurisdiction over the club website as Richard is still in control of that.
We run this Blog and appreciate any input from club members, so come on you lot out there

Committee Meeting

We went to the first Committee meeting of the newly elected committee on Monday night and the main discussion was the coming years program.

A draft copy of the diary was checked out by the members and after a few alterations was excepted, so now its only a case of waiting for other people to come up with their dates ie The Marple Locks Show which is on this year (biannual ) but there is some discussion by them as to whether to go in with the Marple festive ! so we await them for that date. July if going alone possibly September if a joint event so have to wait for other people for that.

Those that went in 2009 will remember we had a very good day and about 35-40 boats on show

Set up ready with the new gazebos

Manning the tent waiting for the crowds

Some Members had their model canal boats sailing

So certainly one to watch out for, plenty of other things to see in-between your stint in the tent !.
Diary will be put on here as soon as dates finalised.

Get Well Soon

We had an e-mail to-day from Graham ( of Windermere model "The Lily" Fame )  to-day to the effect that he had been taken into Leighton Hospital before Christmas , but hasten to add that he is back home now and I'm sure that all you Club members will all join in wishing him a speedy recovery and hope to see him back at the lake soon with his superb models

The lake is still frozen solid so still no sailing though Dave the old reliable was there yesterday with his boats talk about hopeful ! as you can see he did manage a little sail !
