And there's more.

I was so keen to get my video of the  Frostbite Day event on the blog yesterday I'd missed some stills that I'd taken on the day so here they are. If I missed you on the video I just might have caught you here.

Thinning out now

Pals

Pepe found a friend, put him down Mrs Sutcliffe you don't know where he's been and he doesn't float!

Bob's shot
And just to show you the difference between a good camera and my cheapy one, here is a picture that Bob Abell took on the day as well,  mind you, as always "You get what you pay for"  don't you

That's all folks, just a reminder of another great day at the lake.

By the way thanks for the Reindeer Burgers, Glyn.

Etherow model boat club,Frostbite Day sail

To-day was the Club's last event of the year and what a day to finish on, as you can see from the following video the weather was very kind to us and the turn out was great.
The soup, mince pies and drinks on hand in the clubhouse were to the usual standard, with Mike doing his usual efficient job in the kitchen, I hope it was appreciated by everyone in attendance.
If you didn't turn up, though one reason or another you can see what you missed in the video.
Good job every member didn't turn up really, there wouldn't have been enough room on the work benches  or the landing stage come to think of it.

Another good event, what a way to end the year!.
If this next year is as good it will be great, there is already a year planner on the notice board in the clubhouse with events on it already, so keep your eye on that.
See you all in the New Year.

Merry Christmas!

To all our members and readers

Don't forget its frostbite Day on the 27th

That's the day after Boxing Day if you can't remember it, hopefully the lake won't be frozen over this year.

Just so you can see a white Christmas, it looks better on a picture anyway doesn't it!

John and I had a trip to ECP yesterday and John had his sea trials  on his new scratch build boat

See you at the lake on the 27th, Hot soup, Mince pies and good company what more could you want after the festivities at home.

Once again Merry Christmas to you all

Game for a laugh

Has the title says, just for a laugh to get you into the party spirit.

On to more serious things, if you didn't attend the AGM you won't know of the changes on the committee,  so if you go to the menu at the top, click on Committee members and there they are!.
...............................................................................................................
Go to Church this Sunday and avoid the Christmas rush!

There were actually four wise men. On the way to Bethlehem one said he knew a short cut!

A couple of fattened turkeys were talking in the hen house and one said to the other
"Tell me, Cyril do you believe in Santa Claus?.

That's all folks

AGM 2011

Good Turn out for the 2011 AGM.
After a general  discussion on the accounts for the year it was voted that the subs for the year  2012 would be increased by £2 across the board which isn't bad I think as its the first increase since I joined the club in 2006!, add to this the fact that food at all the social events, ie 2 Quiz's and hot pot supper's, Venetian Night and Frostbite Day have been free in the last couple of years, plus the subsidising of the coach trips you are certainly getting your monies worth.
You don't go to any of these events did I hear you say? we we can't drag you to these so its your own fault isn't it!.
The results of the yearly competitions were as follows.

Here are a few of the lucky ones

Me presenting the Velda Teal trophy for the first time.

I was very happy to see that our departed members Graham Harling and Velda Teal were remembered for their services to the club by having a trophy named after each of them
The Graham Harling Trophy for best "J" Class sailor over the year

The Velda Teal Trophy for the best Static Model Or Diorama of the year.
Very nice thought from the committee I think.

Just the Frostbite Sail Day  (27th December) now to round off an excellent year of events and activities, if you missed them as I did  though no fault of my own or you just didn't bother perhaps next year will see another good year where we can support the club and continue to broadcast the club round the country.
Not forgetting Bob Abell's excellent Adventure to be coming up on BBC,  the new series of "Coast" with his wonderful Cable laying Great Eastern filming over the summer, looking forward to that!!

Well what more can I say other than,

Merry Christmas
And
A Happy New Year.
To all club members.

Christmas Dinner

I went to the club Christmas dinner and I enjoyed myself so much I forgot the take any pictures so you will have to take my word for it that it was another resounding success for Mikes organisational abilities
The meals were nice and hot and the company was good so I think everyone enjoyed it as much as I did.

I went to the lake the Saturday before, it was deserted and you could count the people there on one hand,
I had a bowl of hot soup in the refurbished Cafe which went down very well, excuse the pun!

See the new menu

But I didn't pay £3.50 as per the menu, it was on offer as a special at £1.95 as I think they had a dustbin full to get rid of. I think they did the walls with it afterwards to use it up

Same colour as the soup isn't it?
Still I liked it and thought it brightened the place up instead of those drab colours before, the chap in the corner doesn't look too happy does he, was it the weather or the prices I ask myself, no doubt we will be paying for the new decor for years to come!
........................................................................................

AGM this Wednesday 14th Dec 2011
Your chance too vote for committee members!

Its also the Prize giving for the best build competition.

.......................................................................................

Just the Frostbite Day to come now to end a very good year for the club diary

Something a little different

As there isn't much going on at the moment what with the weather and end of the year on the club diary I thought this video might be right for a viewing to see how the other people in modelling spend their time and money.
I wouldn't like the thought of my batteries in the transmitter dying on me with a model like this in the air, would you, and all that money going to hit the ground or someone!

Don't forget the next club meeting is on the 14th December 2011 and its the AGM, new committee members to be voted in and also the prize giving for the boat builders efforts over the past year.
........................................................................................

Hope the Christmas dinner goes down well for everyone on Tuesday, excuse the pun! if its been arranged by Mike I don't doubt it after the past year we have had in the diary with some great events put on by Chris and Mike!

Bob Abell news at Ten, Warwick Model Boat Show

The show report from Warwick, worth the wait as its another splendid report from our ace reporter
 Bob Abell.

Mike Hodgson did a fine job as usual, organising the trip.
Many thanks, Mike, you`re doing a great job.
Here we are at Halfords, Stockport, waiting for 1/2 hour for a missing club member who was still in bed when the coach pulled in!

The Warwick showground comes as a bit of a surprise, when first seen through the coach window! It`s in a farmers field, in the middle of nowhere!

The coach journey is nice, plenty to see and takes about 2.1/2 hours, depending which racing driver you get!
The exhibition consists of four large buildings, which grow larger, as time goes by and by 4.00 pm one is only too glad to crawl back in the coach for a good sit down!
The first club stand had a GIANT destoyer on show, very impressive but lacked any detail. Wouldn`t like that in my garage!

The Model Barge owners stand was very interesting. I often find myself thinking of building another barge, as they are full of olde worlde charm. Saw Richard Chesney on the stand, the stalwart of 1/24th scale barge racing

Canal barges were very popular, as builders can "go to town" fitting them out with all the dolly stuff!

One stand which caught my eye was showing beautifully glossy speedboats, the finish on them was amazing! I was tempted, but once again, managed to misplace my Visa card!

This winter's issue of Modelboats Special contains a write up of a plastic kit conversion by Dave Abbott of the USS Arizona and the actual model was on display on the Luton club stand, which was interesting and I noticed a few more models too, which have appeared in the magazine previously

The Royal Spithead review display was on show again. 575 models, all built to the same scale of 1 inch = 100ft by Jack Snary. Had a good chat with Jack and he has been building his fleet for the past 30 years!
He hopes to build a model of Great Eastern and the rest of Brunels ships, shortly but has a backlog of 12 more battleships to build first!

On the impressive lifeboat stand, was this Watson class on the high seas! The cloth below was motorised in all directions and could easily make one sea sick, just watching it!

Some models must have taken simply years to construct, just look at the immense detail on this WW1 Battleship, complete with delicate anti torpedo nets!

Then an exercise in weathering!

My personal favourite kit builder, Model Slipway!

At the end of the day, what could be nicer than a welcome sit down, rest yer legs and just watch the boats?
Then it`s off home and await the next enjoyable coach trip, but that`ll be next year now!

Bye chaps........Bob Abell

Many thanks to Bob for another splendid report, those that couldn't manage to go will at least get the idea of it for next years outings.

Thanks again to Mike the social sec for another great event this year!.

Sailing

Although I have been involved in this blog in the background since its start, I have not really got involved with its subject matter. A keen modeller my interest has always been railway related. My garden shed has been the home to a few railway related models of various scales.

Ranging from N to G I have had a dabble in various scales and locations.

Like a HO USA layout

Or a G scale scratch built set of stock for outdoors

As family circumstances have changed I have switched my modelling interest so My Dad (Peter) and I can spend more time together sharing a hobby. I am currently "leasing" his excellent Coaster off him. Although I have been "resting" from any model making over the summer I have plans to build a new load for the boat that will involve some trains.

Dad and I have been down to Etherow the last 2 Saturdays, but today was our first day sailing together, along with my youngest daughter Ruth.

There is a family love of cameras, videos and the internet so the day would not be complete without making a film....
