Annual Club Model Construction Competition

EMBC runs an annual competition for model boat construction, judged in early November, with trophies awarded to winners and runners up at the AGM in December.

There are four competition categories, each awarded its own trophy:

• Scratch Built Boats
• Semi Scratch and Semi Kit Boats
• Kit Built Boats
• Static Models, Dioramas and Technical Entries.

General Rules of Entry

• Any entry which has been placed in the top three in any Club competition may not be re-entered in any subsequent year.
• All entries must be the work of the entrant, and not constructed or partially constructed by a third party.
• All entries into the Scratch, Semi Scratch/Kit and Kit categories must be seaworthy and an on the water demonstration may be requested by the judges.
• The decision of the judges as to the appropriate judging category for any entry is final.

Individual Class Definitions

    Scratch Built

• The hull and all major components must be constructed by the entrant.
• The majority of fixtures and fitting must be constructed by the entrant. Marks will be deducted for the use of bought in fittings.
• A true Scratch build to a good standard of workmanship will always attract the highest marks.

    Semi Scratch and Semi Kit

• The use of a pre-formed hull is permitted.
• The use of pre-formed deck and main superstructure is permitted, but marks may be deducted for the use of structural parts not constructed by the entrant.
• At least some of the fixtures and fittings must be constructed by the entrant. Marks will be deducted for the excessive use of bought in fittings.
• Marks will be deducted for poor workmanship.

    Kit Built

• This category includes all models sold as complete kits of parts and other seaworthy models not deemed eligible by the judges for entry in the previous two categories.
• Additional marks will be awarded for additional work by the entrant on constructing fixtures and fittings.
• Marks will be deducted for poor workmanship.

    Static Models, Dioramas and Technical Entries

• This category includes all static, non seaworthy, display models, dioramas of parts of ships, working submarines, where most of the complexity is internal, and any other entries of technical interest associated with boats.
• This category will be judged primarily on the model detail, technical expertise of the entrant in construction, and on the standard of workmanship.

Marking Scheme

Entries to all categories will be marked by a judging panel made up of senior experienced Club members, who will grade entries by awarding points as follows:

These judging rules are based on those original formulated for the by Gordon Longworth, a member of the Club, who is a qualified National Judge of model boat competitions.
