Traders night

I thought the traders night went quite well and there was plenty of interest in the items that Phil had brought along, this was the first time and he wasn't too sure what was wanted by the different people that would turn up.
Some thought he had turned up late, but this was all cunningly arranged so that any announcements to be talked about could be done without interruption.
I thought the members there were quite taken with the idea so have arranged for Phil to come again on the 2nd club night of  June, that is the 22nd of June.
Some of the members stated that they didn't know of this event, but it was discussed at the meeting before this one and put on the club blog diary where its been for two weeks. On the day I also blogged about it to remind people, so if you missed it or didn't take your pennies on the night and you have a PC you have only yourselves to blame.

So put it in your diary and if you saw something you wanted and didn't have your wallet you can always go to the shop now you know what is available there, see location in the entry under "Pages" for shops!

I was given a folder by Phil last night with all the kits he has available and the prices, so if you are in the market for a kit phone me and I will give you the price and might even get you something off with your membership.

Club night 25th May

Don't forget its club night to-night and as its a social and chatting night, after the announcements there will be a chance to check out the wares of  Phil Hesketh of Hyde Model Shop as he will be coming down to the club.

Don't think he will have enough for you to fill one of these this time round, but if he finds out what you need, perhaps next time, but the prices will dictate if there's a next time hey!

......................................................................................................................

If any of you are in the Llandudno area over the Bank Holiday weekend , its worth a look at this

I think this chap only goes on a Sunday, but being a Bank Holiday might go other days.
Well worth the effort though.

"Are you sure its yours?" said the priest!

Hot off the press

Just had an e-mail off Ray Benson, (Ex Etherow Member) Colwyn Bay Model Boat club.
Reads,

Hi Pete.
Saturday, 28th May, 2011 Colwyn Bay Model Boat Club will be at Rhyl Marine lake. We are putting on a show because there will be 7 trains running around the lake! Six steam trains and 1 diesel. The trains have been running around the lake for 100 years so it is a celebration weekend, ( Sunday and Monday trains only.)
There will be other attractions and it is all FREE. 2 of the trains were built in 1921 and they have been completely overhauled and will be running.
Lake can get a bit choppy at times but free sailing.
Can you let your club know what is going on, they might be interested in the trains as there is quite a nice station. Free car parking adjacent to the lake.
Regards Ray

Bob Abell says that a couple of the trains were from the Belle View railway when it closed down, No crying into your beer now!

This could be a good day out and all free, can't be bad.
Bob, Joyce, Rosie, Velda, Pepe and I will be going, hopefully all the weekenders will be at their caravans by then.
Perhaps see some of you there!

Odds and Sods

Not been down to the lake for a while though I imagine the yachting guys have kept the club in view for the public, that's if there's been public there with the weather this passed week!
Hope to get you the results of this months Steering and Club 500 racing soon.

Whilst out walking Pepe the other day  stopped to admire a garden full of flowers and the lady was nice enough to give us some plant roots for the club garden, see there are nice people about, its not all muggers and rapists out there.

The plants were that purple stuff that grows out of garden walls and Velda thought it would be nice  just where you come onto the landing stage at the side of the noticeboard.
One place we will not have to replenish every year if it takes off.

Purple stuff mentioned.

Don't forget its club night this Wednesday and the chap from Hyde Models is bringing some gear to  sell, that is if the price is right, Wasn't that a TV program?.
Not much news at the moment, other than Chris is getting on well with his arrangements for the big weekend of the Regatta/Lifeboat show which will put EMBC more firmly on the map.
Try putting Etherow on the search part of YouTube and see some of the model boats I've put on there recently, more cheap advertising hey.
We have had quite a few new members the last couple of months, some are back after a spell away  from modelling and others new to the mystic of  motors, esc's,wiring and all the other things that make this such an exciting hobby
I'm sure they will all be given a nice welcome into the club, and you will all be giving them a helping hand to master the in and outs of some of the newer systems on the market.

"Have you ever spoken before a large audience before?"
"Yes. And I said not Guilty"

Bob Abell News At Ten, Harrogate.

The Harrogate show was very spectacular! It covered three halls and catered mainly for the Iron Fighters!
I`ve made a few locos and engines in my far off days and being a one time engineer, the show was especially interesting.
Met a few chaps from Bury and Colwyn bay clubs, which was nice to see a few familiar faces among the masses
The problem with big exhibitions for those getting on in years is the walking about! After two or three hours, one`s legs begin to feel the strain and there were very few seats about. So next time, I`ll be taking the folding seat apparatus!
There were lots of model boats about.......and planes.....and lorries.......locos.......miscellaneous stuff.....machines....tools......materials.....models for sale etc......In fact, too much to take in at one go!
Silly me went with a shopping list and forgot all about it! Managed to buy a few handy tools and brass bar
Talking of models for sale, I spotted a few large lovely traction engines, priced between £24,000 to £32,000!.....Goodness knows what the 12" gauge locos cost!

£32000 Traction engine.

Noticed the cost of loco parts were unbelieveably expensive....a set of plans.....£100!.......and we think a ship plan at £12.00 is dear! A set of wheel castings.....£200! Small simple loco kits......£1500!
So let`s get back to reality.....the boats!
Visited the Tyneside club stand and I knew Alex Thompson was a member. Unfortuneately, he wasn`t there, but some of his boats were on show. Alex designed the famous Jeanie Deans model, which I have made, plus a few dozen more and has a few "Nom de plumes" to his name. He has a good sense of humour.

King George the V

Also had a word with Arthur Barlow, a big noise in the Lifeboat brigade. He was at our LB Show last year and is a frequent visitor to Colwyn bay club.
Arthur has built a perfect lifeboat replica of the Llandudno lifeboat from original plans. For the very fine detail, he measured the full size craft. He showed me his sketches, he even measured the tool box and contents! Some of the screws he used, were as fine as 16BA! Alas!....that`s not my cup of tea!

Wheelwright Diorama

All in all, the best show I`ve been to, in years!
Many thanks to Mike for organising the trip.
The next trip out, is the Woodvale show in August......and I`ll be taking my folding bicycle!

Bob Abell

And many thanks to you Bob, for such a great report, after seeing this I'll bet there are some out there wishing they had gone now, still this report is the next best thing!

Saturday, The Big Day.

Well folks who would have believed it a few years ago Man City in with a chance for the Cup! Last silverware 1976 ??.

Also its the big day for the club's outing to Harrogate Model Show, it brings to mind the old carry on films, the loading of the crates of  Beer and the pulling into the lay-by whilst everyone dashes into the bushes, you can imagine it can't you! . But imagine the sad faces of those who forgot it is the Cup Final day AND Man City playing. Hope Mike's not sat on the coach on his own !.
I've always thought the founding members of the club got it a bit wrong not to include "Stockport" in to the title or at least on the badges of the club as I've been asked on many occasions whilst out and about  "Etherow where's that" but take a look at this item in Model Boats magazine after our last show for the RNLI.

Now people will know where we are !!
I think we need to get the post code sorted as it seems to take some people up into the hills, or is it the fact they aren't listening to the nice lady !.

Ariel view, felt quite dizzy up there

In case you missed this earlier Commodores challenge, a boat made of household rubbish!.
What an entry.
...............................................................................................................

"Where does your football team play, Grandpa?"
"What football team? What are you talking about?"
"Oh, Dad says when you kick off we can get a new house!"
................................................................................................................
"I heard  you had a difficult time explaining the Cup Final to your wife".
"Yes she found out I didn't go"
.......................................................................................................
At the turnstiles it was being explained to McTavish that there were seats at £80, £40 and £20 and programs were £5
"Ok said Mctavish , I'll sit on a program.

Club night 11th May 2011

Last night at the club, in case you couldn't make it!
After the usual announcements, in which I passed the idea of Phil Hesketh of Hyde Sports and Models coming to the club meetings on the second of the monthly meetings bringing with him some of his boating wares to sell, it was agreed that he should be able to come and see how it went.
Mike the social Rep confirmed the times of pick up at Stockport and Denton for the coach on Saturday for the trip to Harrogate. Also said that the prices were now set for the trip to Woodvale (Southport show) at £12.50 for members and £15 for guests.
Chris the Exhibition Rep Confirmed that the Haydock Show was all set and asked for any other members wanting to go and exhibit to contact him for application forms.
Regatta/ lifeboat weekend arrangements were going smoothly.

Then it was on to the main part of the meeting ,ie a talk from Mike on Air boats, he had brought a couple of boats and the talk went well with plenty of interaction with the members !

Two of the boats

NO NO that white fan is not on the boats

The white fan is not part of the boats, I know how some of you will be thinking !!

There you are I've cloned it out.

There were three new guys there, one signed up and the other two said they were going to down load application forms and send them in, both these guys had brought boats they had bought "Pre-owned " as its called these days ,( but for us oldies "second-hand" ) and didn't even know what they were,
so The Higham Bros went to investigate and advise them.
So it all seemed to go well and everyone seemed pleased on the night , But there again I know you can't please everyone !

Club 500 and steering scores for April.

Last night at  the committee meeting I was handed the scores for the Club 500 meeting for last month
John Davis (1) 82 points
Howard Meadowcroft  (2) 70 points
Bernard Chidley (3) 55points

And the steering comp scores were
1st Alan Higham.
Equal 2nd Terry Miles. Geoff Fitzsimons.
3rd Eddie Higham.

..................................................................................................................
I took the time out to-day to go to see Hyde Sports and Models shop in Hyde as the new owner was at the club  meeting on the night of Charlie Ricardo's table top sale.
Phil Heskeith is the new owner, after a chat with him he says he can get most kits and at reasonable prices, he also has a stock of nice condition used boats in the shop for sale

ie this nice yacht , slightly smaller than my Micro magic, but at £65 ready to sail with tranny, just needs "AA batteries for power" I thought was an indication for his used stock.
I noticed that a Lead Acid battery, 6v -10amh was £9.99 . the last one I bought was £13 and I thought it was a bargain. Please tell me you know where I can get same for a fiver!.

There was a good range of props, servos, motors and wait for it thin sheets of Plywood for the scratch builders and 500 builders.

So give it a try and lets try to keep this one and only shop in the area open, depends on his prices though hey
.
From Stockport just up the M60 , onto the M67 come off at Hyde and your there.
There is a car park on the same street and its free on the upper levels
See details of shop in the "Shops" section of the blog
......................................................................................................

There are details of the RNLI and Regatta  in June in the club diary whilst you are in that area of blog, plus details of prices for Woodvale show (Southport) now available to book with Mike Hodgson.

.............................................................................................................
The young actor was excited at getting a job and rushed home to tell his father.
"Guess what Dad, I play a man who has been married for 30years"
"No matter, son . Lets hope you will eventually get a speaking part.

Etherow Model Boat Club Garden.wmv

Friday saw Velda and I at the lake again, Velda putting in new plants for the summer season so they will be in full bloom by the time of the Regatta and Lifeboat weekend in June.
That is of course if they are watered regularly and as you would expect we  don't get to the lake everyday so IF we have another hot spell it would be appreciated  if you see the garden drying out before going home after sailing you could put a few scoops of water on to the gravel on the garden here and there then the plants could get it from underneath. (Capillary action)
This is your landing stage and garden so please help to keep it looking nice, I know you go to sail and not to work, but a couple of scoops of water on the gravel isn't much to ask.
We saw that the yacht club had bought a couple of nice hanging baskets for their launch day, but on Friday they were dead and lifeless, what a waste of money and effort  for a few drops of water.
This is the garden to date.

Having had my moan I can now seen hundreds of scoops of water flooding the garden, but I'm sure there are plenty of gardeners in the club than can help, the heavy works done so please help.

Its surprising how many people stop to view the garden and then you can get them talking and give them some insight to the club and you never know they might join us.

Puzzled about his first lesson on evolution young Joey arrived home and said
"Mum is it really true that I am a descendant of apes, monkeys and gorillas?"
"I don't know darling" she replied , I never knew any of your fathers family.

Fred was the type of bloke who always let his friends pick up the dinner bill.
He had an impediment in his reach .

Great Eastern

The Great Eastern as you probably know was the first iron ship built by Brunel with Screw Prop, Paddle wheels and sails, after a lot of research our club member Bob Abell decided to scratch build a 7 foot model of it.

Tough in those days, the walkways were for the officers to sail the ship, in all weathers!.

Out of retirement!

Just recently he has brought it out again to add the cable laying feature to it.
Did you know the Great Eastern was the ship that laid the first transatlantic telegraph cable, there you go you have not had a wasted few minutes reading this, but learned something.

Winding winch to bring cable on deck, can you imagine enough cable to go across the big pond.

Cable run

Cable off back of ship

Not content with this Bob added a fishtail rudder , yes I know before you mention it, its a Becker rudder to give it its right name.

To follow this project further

Hope you enjoy following this project to its conclusion.

Etherow New lifeboat.

Yesterday we went early to the lake, had lunch and walked Pepe round then went to the club house for the launch of the yacht club's new rescue boat, that we had all been invited to, there was another couple of members there as well , Including a new family signed up on the day!

Ken Pheasy arrived with his new lifeboat and after a bit of trouble with one motor not working, discovered it was a lead worked loose in transportation, but all very interesting to the boys of the new family members in tracing and repairing the fault, good experience for them.
All went well with the maiden voyage though as you can see here

The Red and White boat in the distance on the video is Velda's "Aziz".
I had the club boat ("Paula 111) out and was giving a small boy a go when the strong side wind capsized it, so it was out with our rescue boat and off like Steve Redgrave to get it, still working when I got it back to shore and given a good dry out in the sun and ready for action next time out

Another good day at the lake!
Three new memberships in the post when we got home, so four new members in total on the day!
