Lyme Park, Cancellation 2018.

If you remember the last post, you will have seen the fact that we may have a sail at Lyme Park again this year, but yet again the park has renegaded at the last minute again!.

Due to a last hour decision by the Park Ranger the sail at the park is off.

On a happier note you will see that we have a new rescue boat, Cyril 11.

There was a notice put on the public side of the notice board, whether  it survived the winds last night is another thing with just those two strips of tape on it.

Howard Meadowcroft giving a talk on some of the models he has made over the years, these talks are always useful as you can always pick up hints and tips on how others overcome difficulties and problems. 

When people ask me how to do things in modelling, I always advise them to join a good modelling club as there is all sorts of models and types and it would have to be someone very good to know everything in the hobby!.

They wanted a canal boat to reflect the canal system that used to operate from there in the old days and I offered my boat that I'd just finished.
Nice dog friendly room with good lighting and heating!

Over the weekend, Nov 2014.

If you haven't noticed yet!, there are some of the events the club will be involved in next year in the tabs at the top of the site.

You will notice that there is a new Venue at Bugsworth Canal Basin, and Commodore Alan not the type to let the grass grow under his feet went to see for himself, and you of course!.

Had a run up to Bugsworth on Saturday, met one of the organisers a really nice spot looking forward to the event.

On the Sunday there was an Impromptu Steering event, which was a carry over from the event that should have been at Lyme Park Show earlier in the year but was rained off.

The Higham brothers plus Geoff and all those in the image took part, congratulations to the winners and participants, the weather didn't look too clever by the way they are wrapped up there, but still all smiling.

Visit to Colwyn Bay show

The members who visited the Colwyn Bay show again this year were not disappointed, after setting off from Manchester in pouring rain it got slowly better as we got into Wales and on arrival it was starting to get nice and sunny though there was a stiff breeze over the water which made it a bit choppy.

Talking of Bleeze's our Commodore was taken ill and wasn't able to manage it, so we didn't have a gazebo though as you can see we managed in true Etherow fashion.

That sinking feeling, those that were there the previous year realised it's supposed to do that.

Our friends that we met at our Do at Lyme Park, Garth and Elizabeth Jones with their fabulous Nessie the Loch Ness monster were there from Yorkshire and Nessie was a great hit again.

Garth has just finished this superb boat, the build which has been published in the Model Boat magazine forum over the last three years and completely scratchbuilt and wonderfully weathered, look at that handy carrying handle.

The only sour point for me was the fact the Best scratchbuilt model went to the same guy that won last year, a Colwyn Bay member I beleive, that can't happen at our club as the winner this year is one of the Judges next year, which gives others a chance to win, this is only my opinion, (I try to keep an open mind) and not the opinion of our club, still it might put people off bothering next year don't you think!.

 The winner of the scratch build, I'm into Narra boats myself, but two years on the run!.

Return to Lyme Park!

Well, after a few years wandering in the wilderness, we have finally returned to Lyme park, well not really wandering in the wilderness, got carried away there, we have been to other places in the mean time.

It was due to our new exhibition secretary's efforts than we are finally back to this lovely venue.

There was some hiccups at first with the promised equipment not being there but I'm sure that that wasn't down to Gordon, perhaps the park's new events manager not being aware of the size of our club's fleet.

The weather looked a bit off putting at first and the crowds weren't in evidence, but after an early dinner in the Cafe the rain stopped and the crowds stuffed with Sunday dinners appeared to admire our fleet.

Apart from our own club members in attendance, Ray Benson and Sid both ex Etherow members and their wives all the way from Colwyn Bay, (we will be returning the favour next month don't forget.).

Also there were Gareth Jones (Of Model Boats magazine forum fame)  and wife Elizabeth (a keen Yachtswoman), from over the hill in Yorkshire,and they added to the day with this superb model of Nessie,

Seen having  a go on the steering course, but more of that later in the video's.

Well that's it, I think it was a great first event for our return to this lovely venue and hopefully we will be back in September, with a better understanding with the park people of our requirements.

Last visited

The last time I visited the lake was Tuesday 6th May 2014.

There were the usual regulars in attendance with their "J" class yachts and also Le Commodore with one of his Big naval vessels, he described it as a sloop, but not being a naval man I will leave that to you more knowledge guys!, enough to say it is to Alan's usual standard with plenty of detailing on board.

Lyme Park Exhibition 15^th. June 2014

Guidance notes

     After some discussion we are again going to be able to enjoy a day’s sailing at Lyme Park this year. This will be in conjunction with a major event at Lyme Park itself on Father’s Day the 15^th. June, which they do each year. They will be staging a number of attractions and activities on the day and we will be one of them, i.e. we are there to enhance the Public’s day and make it more interesting and enjoyable for them, consequently we will have to fit in with their ideas on the subject, although in reality they are being as flexible as they can.

     Therefore it is absolutely imperative that we comply with their wishes, which I realise will make problems for some of our disabled members, but if we want to get back there then we will have to try and work round it. If this goes well they are already considering the option of another day in late September.

     We will be sailing on not one but two lakes, namely the Mill Pond Lake by the tea rooms which we used to use before, and also the Garden Reflections Lake behind the Hall. They will NOT allow any IC engines or fast speed boats, anything else is fine. We are expected to engage with the public and to be friendly and approachable at all times. Mention at the entrance that you are with our Club as an Exhibitor and parking is free.

Mill Pond Lake

     Arrive 08.30hrs, vehicles have access to the pond until 10.30hrs when they all MUST be parked in the main car park. This includes members who are blue badge holders and/or NT members. For blue badge holders an area of the main coach park will be roped off nearest to the lake. There will be a Lyme Park electric buggy available to shuttle people back and forth. It is essential that members of the public who are also blue badge holders have access to the limited parking area by the lake. The path from the timber yard to the play area must not be obstructed. We will have our Gazebo erected on the small grassy area which we used before. Launching can take place directly from the water’s edge by the path.

      Vehicles will not be allowed back by the lake until after 16.00hrs, please aim to vary the time so that all cars are not there at the same time.

Garden Reflections Lake

     Arrive 08.30hrs and drive up to the main Hall and through the gates, to the right hand corner entrance by the large wrought iron railings, a member of the garden team will open the gate. There will be a large Lyme marquee on the lawn to the right of the Hall, we have 3 tables (they will supply) for our display purposes, heavy boats can be transported down the path by car, BUT NOT ON THE GRASS. All vehicles must then be removed to the main car park by 10.30hrs. Again a buggy or minibus will be available for those who need it. Finish time/comments as other lake.

     It is around 50 yards from the marquee to the lake at the rear of the Hall across the main lawn, so either bring a ‘light weight’ boat or a trolley if you want to sail on it. The garden lake is around 5feet deep in the middle but shelves off to nothing at the gravelled edge so keep deep keeled boats for the Mill Pond. I suggest you bring a pair of ‘wellies’ anyway. For those not familiar with the Park, to get up to the Hall you have to climb a steep stepped slope from the car park once you have parked, which is about 100+ yards to their main marquee – so ensure you don’t forget anything when dropping off.

2014 Diary.

The 2014 diary is now available to view in the tabs at the top of the blog!.

As you will see there is some great news from Gordon the new Exhibition Sec!, we are going back to Lyme Park after a few years break, it seems there is a new events manager there now and he has agreed with Gordon for us to attend the Fathers Day event this year in June.

We have also been given a chance to go back again in September, this will be decided after the show in June, the new manager will obviously want to see the results of our behaviour at the first event!.
I'm sure everyone who has attended this great venue in the past will be as happy as I am to be going back there.
As you will see there are a few other new venues this year so it looks like it's going to be a good year again, but don't forget it's only as good as the attendance/effort the members put into it.

The days are getting longer now, but as I was saying to my friend Bob the Abell the worse weather is nearly always Febuary and March but looking at this years diary we have at least got plenty to look forward to this year.
The Commodores Challenge the year will be a Blind sailing event ??, see the tab at the top of the blog for details.

Out and about 2013

Over the past week we (Marjorie and I) have not been out much as we have both been a bit off colour with coughs and colds, so I decided to take Pepe to Lyme Park in High Lane, Stockport.

One of our members a few weeks ago had been talking to the chap who was the events organiser there and had explained that we used to have a show there twice a year with our club, the chap was very interested and said the person who had been in charge who had stopped us going had now left and indicated he would like us to come back!, the member hadn't got the name or phone number of this chap!.

This was music to my ears as it was a beautiful venue and had a large audience to show off our models. 

So our new membership card for the National Trust clutched in my frozen little hand it was off to find this chap.

After asking around I finally ended up in the Estates Office in the big house and found out that the chap I wanted was in a meeting and there was no idea when it would end, I left my Club and Personal business cards and was told he would contact me, still as its very close to Christmas I suppose there is plenty for him to do on the estate at the moment, hopefully this will be the start of our club and the park getting together again as it's a beautiful venue and everyone loved it, us and public alike.

I got a contact Name and Telephone number so was quite happy about that.

Pepe looked quite at home sat on the big chair in the office there, looked like he owned the place!.

On the way out I took a few pictures, didn't think it would be all text did you!.
