Black Panther

Black Panther was inspired by the 2019 Commodore's Challenge, to build a Noodle Tug. After I had completed my entry in that competition, I decided to see if it was possible to build a fast RIB, using the same principles, where the pool noodles provide a representation of the air bags, and also extra buoyancy.

The hull is a freelance design, loosely based on the RNLI Atlantic 85, at approximately 1:10 scale.

Construction is plywood throughout, apart from the noodles.

Propulsion is via a Kehrer 28 water jet, powered by a 750 kV outrunner brushless motor from a Turnigy 60 A brushless ESC. Batteries are 4S LiPo [14.8 V]. The water jet is not fitted with reversing buckets, so forwards only.

The helmsman is an Action Man figure, at 1:6 scale, so the whole boat is a bit of a mix of scales.

The superstructure detailing is minimal, as she was built as a proof of concept model, rather than of exhibition quality.

RC Control is a simple two channel system, using a  FlySky 2.4 GHz transmitter and receiver.

On water testing shows excellent planing, fairly high speed and exceptional handling on turns.

                     Nautilus

Disney Nautilus ‘Finally Finished’

Thought you may wish to see my ‘lockdown project’

From the 1954 film 2000 leagues under the sea

The original prop was designed by Disney’s Harper Goff and is on display at Disney Florida.

This is the most accurate model available from the USA by Masterpiece Models and from a mould by master sculptor Scot Bodeen

32” long. Rivet detail is superb, not a model for the faint hearted it comes in two pieces, a very heavy resin casting and very poor instructions however Bob Martin on You Tube is an excellent point of reference.

The rudder cabin detail and externals are separate sadly some of the detail castings were poor so I scrapped them.

The model is sprayed in acrylic grey metallic with airbrushed weathering and rust (subtle) then sprayed in matt lacquer.

You have to carefully plan the build and design your own lighting.

The cabin glows green as does the water level tube but this does not show up on the photo.

The stand was not particularly good so this went in the bin and I designed my own with blue LED up lights.

Ferret MTB

Winner - Commodore's Challenge - 2020

The challenge was for using recycled bits as much as possible in the build  of the ferret from the plans provided.

The Battery box and speed controller came from last years' noodle tug challenge.

The rudder stem came from the club auction last year and the rudder itself was made from scrap brass, including making new pins to fix to the stem. The tube was ex stock from tool box.

The balsa was approx. 10 years old and the ply 5 years old, having been stored in the back of my wardrobe and unused until now.  I had to glue 2 sheets of balsa together to get the required deck width for the lower sheet. The ply was literally just large enough with no adjustment on the length of it

The steering wheel, searchlight and aerial have all come from my plastic bits tin  -from making Airfix kits approx. 45 years ago. All cleaned and freshly painted.

The Captain figure was found at a charity shop as a Yellow Construction worker and 10p was paid for it. The hard hat was filed down and he suffered an amputation and re-glue /fix to one of his arms. He was then re-painted in matt navy blue.

The torpedo tubes were small rocket launchers from last years' November 5th, which were bright orange , prior to 3 coats of spray grey paint.

The torpedo supports - scrap Balsa off-cuts painted gloss black

The torpedo end caps are kitchen screw covers from my garage box of bits.

The gun is scratch built from various bits of plastic kit from 45 years ago, same source as above.

The windscreen is a back bumper form a broken die-cast car-MINI.

The duck boards and depth charge supports are bits of "Blox" imitation Lego bricks, found in the right colour and glued . The depth charges are each made from 2 plunger parts from my diabetic injection pen glued together,  glued to the support .

The 6 small black vents are also from the injection pen and painted gloss black.
The large rear curved top access hatch is scratch built from balsa.

The air cowls are brass shoe eyelets glued onto a bendy straw and a balsa block
The jack-staff and servo linkage are from a piece of steel wire found in my office desk drawer at work a couple of weeks ago.

The motor, prop tube and linkage, together with the paint and glue, are the only newly purchased items in this build.

Proboat Stealthwake

I have a new boat, a Proboat Stealthwake, it has a 550 brushed motor, I just love the look of it.

On the transmitter it has dual throttle control so it can be used at Etherow at a slow speed with maximum throttle or if turned up can be used on a fast electrics venue. This dual control really appeals to me.

'Tear Into' Jet Boats

A few of years ago there was a ‘challenge’ starting in the USA of upgrading these Chinese Toy R/C Jet Boats (£35 on eBay)

The hulls although Vac formed plastic are really very well designed.

Bought a couple gutted them and chucked everything away apart from the hull - including the figures, receiver, servo, and jet drive.

A smart paint job, a stainless anti roll bar, Led stainless lights, put it in a tool box and it’s a go anywhere fun craft as quick or slow as you wish.

Second photo is as bought.

  • Graupner Mini Jet Drive converted to take a brushless motor.

  • Water cooled speed controller.

  • LiPo Battery.

I used Shoe Goo clear adhesive during the conversion, fantastic for boats and modelling applications.

They can be easily tamed on the transmitter to be socially acceptable on Etherow Water.

Jet Boat

Designed by Engineer Dr.Thomas Kehrer of German company KMB.

KMB have developed a series of racing hulls and specially designed jet pumps.

An excellent company to do business with but bear in mind they do not really supply kits.

Rather like buying BMW you start with the basic hull and add the accessories.

KMB fibreglass hulls are of ‘bath tub’ quality possibly, the best I have seen, with a ‘thick gelcoat’ - no need to paint.

The KMB Jet nozzle pump has been designed by a professional in hydrodynamics.

Reversing is optional using either a steering & thrust reversal system using a jet 28 exhaust nozzle, or the Riva Calzoni steering thrust nozzle Both these nozzle designs are as used in full size practice.

I have fitted both but prefer the Riva Calzoni.

This Police Jet is fitted with blue strobing lights, police siren & Battenburg reflective livery generated by myself.

Specification:

Brushless 4 pole 3500KV (400) water-cooled brushless motor.

Battery One 3c 22000 mAh Lipo.

Speed controller: Turnigy Aquastar water cooled 60amp.

Full load test 134 watts @7.4v pulling approx 18 amps.

Unfortunately at full throttle the boat will leap out of the water unless the throttle is opened slowly.

Not really ideal for Etherow, but I have, with permission, demonstrated the boat at just above idle at a speed which is socially acceptable.

                              SL Fire Queen

Open launch steam boat.

Scratch built Hull: 3ft beam 11” Clinker type.

Planking: Pear & Sycamore. Caulking: Black Photographic card inlaid between planks.

Rudder: Stainless Steel.

Fittings: Stainless Steel.

Condenser: Copper.

Boiler: Hemmens firetube with ceramic gas burner.

Steam Condenser.

Engine: An interesting engine, which is why it’s the only engine I have ever bought!

Saito 4 cylinder Vee twin single acting

Valves: Slide valves in each cylinder head

I imported this engine new and boxed from Australia which is, along with the USA, a prime market for Saito (Japan).

Few Saito steam models reach UK stores, so need to be imported. I’m not saying you don’t see them in the UK but they are somewhat rare.

The engine is beautifully made and demonstrates the art of clock making rather than steam_ engine manufacture.

‘Saito’ is etched into each head.

The engine purrs on steam with very little vibration.

                              Turbinia

Static 25:1 Scale Model Scratch built in 1995.

Turbinia Hull built by Hood & Brown.

Engines by Parsons: Originally 1 radial inflow steam turbine.

Changed to 3 axial flow 3 stage reaction turbines HP-IP-LP.

3 Propeller Shafts, 1 turbine per shaft, 3 X 18” propellers per shaft.

Developed a method of photographing propeller cavitation.

Dimensions 100ft X 9ft beam ‘Ram bow’ & Clipper Stern Max speed 34.5 Knots.

Discovery Museum Newcastle

Rolls-Royce (Owners of Parsons Newcastle).

In 1997 Rolls-Royce created a purpose built gallery for Turbinia.

On completion of the model the museum curator invited me to visit Turbinia and was honoured to be allowed on deck (stood on the right with the curator).

Due to my work in Turbo machinery I have a mass of photographs and information about Turbinia if anyone wishes to raise a question.

                              River Queen

From a Vic Smeed drawing.

Plank on frame ‘clinker’ hull, Mahogany keel, transom & stem, planking 1/16” Birch ply.

I can highly recommend Mr. Smeed’s drawing as one of the most accurate  I have ever worked with.

The hull is built inverted on a jig and then ‘sprung’ off the jig…..not for the faint hearted.

Engine from a Peter Arnot drawing (superbly accurate).

Vee twin double acting reversing oscillator.

Unusual feature is the inlet & exhaust headers which use banjo bolts to admit inlet and exhaust steam.

Firetube vertical boiler with ceramic burner.

Steam condenser.

I was commissioned to build this boat for an eminent Professor of surgery hence the Morph with stethoscope.

                              Turbinia 2

Scratch built Marine steam turbine test bed.

Reinforced fibreglass ‘Perkasa’ hull

Three prototype reversing Steam Turbines were developed until the final model, this hull being used during tests at Etherow.

Scratch built ‘Tesla’ Steam Turbine & generator.

4 stainless rotor discs and 4 nozzles (Stainless ‘hypodermic’ tubing)

The proposal was for the generator to power an electric motor coupled to a propshaft.

A Tesla turbine can use any fluid however tests on steam proved the machine was just too ‘greedy’

At this scale not practical in a small model.

                           Pilot Boat 'Helen'

Fibreglass Hull.

30" long 9" beam, twin screw, twin rudder, air cooled esc.

Not had the boat long , it's either a kit assembled and painted very well or a RTR purchase at some point.

I may upgrade the motors as it seems a little under powered for a pilot.

HMCS Sackville is believed to be the last Flower Class Corvette still afloat, out of 294 originally built.

He visited and filmed the ship in Halifax, Canada last year.

His video of the ship can be downloaded from here.

Be aware that the file is 138 mB, and will take some time to download if you
have slow broadband.
