Captains Quick & Harrison

Met Colin Harrison and Andy Quick today at the lake, I've been in contact with Andy for a number of weeks and to-day was the first time we have met in person!. We all got on like a house on fire and Andy said "Have you got your camera", I usually have and as I've tried to tell my lovely grand-daughter you can miss a lot of shots with a big SLR but these days the compact camera is so good and always handy.

First a video of Andy's motor torpedo boat

Then it was a video of Colin's "J" Class and Andy's destroyer which was on its maiden voyage so it was with a bit of in trepidation that it was put on the water, but it sailed away and handled very well, two props but only one rudder working through a mixer unit. Andy wasn't too happy with the turning circle of the boat so I think it's back to the work bench when he gets home to sort out the mixer unit and/or size of rudder

Commodore Chris and his lady Gillian came along later, Gillian with a tug and Chris with his Submarine, didn't manage to get a video of those perhaps next time, or at the Raft races on the 4th June.
There will stil be the normal sailing on our lake so could get quite a few boats in a video then.

That's all for to-day folks, hope you like the video's.

Latest News

The last Club Meeting saw a good attendance and the Commodore Chris gave a good talk on his latest project which he is covering on the outside with lytho plate which he said was used by the printing industry.

There was also a request from the yacht club for volunteers and helpers for the up coming
Raft Races event on Bank Holiday Monday the 4th of June.,
small things like making sure everyone is handed out a life jacket before going on the water, and anyone help man or woman the tea bar.

Always seem to have a bit of bad news as well don't we!, yesterday George Barrett phoned me to say he wouldn't be down to the club for a while as he was knocked off his motorbike, car going 10 mph he going 5 mph, as always the motorcyclist comes off worst don't they, more sinned against than sin, (I know I've been into motor cycling)
George sustained a broken ankle and is in a plaster cast, he is going to Stepping Hill  Hospital again to-day so they can have another look once the swelling as gone down.
I'm sure he will be glad of a chat now and then from his mates at the club and I'm sure he will be Abell to get a lift to the meetings again soon!.
On a lighter note Bob Abell sent me this picture, as we are both into photography we were just saying the other day we never see baby Mandarin Ducks and here is his picture from yesterday.

I know we don't like the duck poo on the landing stage but you have to like these and you don't see them at our end of the lake so they are not the guilty poo'ers hey.
Nice picture Bob!

So don't forget this coming Monday the 4th June Raft racing event on the big lake, our lake will still   be available for us to show the public our hobby and efforts in the model world.

Don't forget folks, every boat can be is a mine sweeper, once!
PS
Just spoke to George and asked how he went on at the hospital. they'd phoned him this morning and told him not to go to-day and leave it until Monday morning and go to the fracture clinic then, there will be too much swelling to-day they said.
He has broken his leg at the bottom near the ankle, it seems.
The other driver as admitted liability to the Police and Georges insurance people so that's a good point!

Queen Mary 2 at Etherow Country Park

The club night on the 9th of this month featuring George Barrett's and my  Narra Boats seemed to go well with plenty of questions and feed back afterwards, sorry for you chaps that weren't there, in the excitement I forgot to take a photo of George's boat!, you saw mine on the last post, but George has a lot more to do on his and I will try and get him to bring it in again when he is further on with his build.
On Saturday I was at the lake sailing my Micro magic, with Pepe giving his usual complement when along came Bob Chesworth with his scratch built Queen May 2, remembered to get my camera out this time and took this video.

The workings

Sits nice on the water

I was surprised by the size of the Motor, Prop and Battery! but what do I know, it was going very well as you can see on the video so Bob must be doing something right.

This is the real thing ...

That's all for now folks.

"I'll go though anything for you" he said
"Good let's start with your bank account", she said.

He does not get lost, he discovers alternative destinations.

Bob's "Coast" TV program Date!

I got a message from Bob Abell yesterday to say.

Got a broadcast film release date at last

May 20th Sunday at 9.00....on BBC2

Only hope it meets with our satisfaction!
Bob

For those of you who don't know what this refers to, it's Bob's "Great Eastern" model that will be shown on the TV program "Coast" depicting the ship on it's cable laying trials and tribulations with the first telegraph cable across the Atlantic.
This adventure has given Bob hours and hours of fun, making the boat and then doing the alterations to turn it into the cable layer that will be shown in the program.
It has also given the club plenty of publicity on various websites, at the filming in Hoylake and the showing at Ellesmere Port Model Boat Show this March.
.......................................................................................
Also on the boat building scene!
The next club meeting of 9th May 2012.
This will be a double talk given by Peter Teal and George Barrett on their present builds,
Pete's kit built Narra Boat and George's bought hull from the same company (Riverside Models) and then scratch built as a working boat, as only George can with his eye for detail.
It will show the changing scenes of the narrow boat from working boat to leisure craft.

This is a preview of Pete's boat, not seen George's myself yet!.
