Muggy, Damp day at the lake

Muggy, Damp day at the lake
Today at the lake it was drizzly, damp and not very nice though it didn't put off these hardy sailors, sorry if I didn't catch you all there, but didn't want my chest infection back with all the damp and cold.
Here is a video of the sailors that were there when I was there.

Commodore Al said that there were negotiations going on with the yacht club to have electrics put into our container and help with the yacht club's electrics too!.
The painting of the container will be held up at the moment with this weather, or we will be wasting your money with it blistering the first time it get's warm and coming off in big sheets!.
Not long before the Club Christmas dinner again, can't believe its a year since the last one, still time flies when you're having fun doesn't it, mind you at most of our ages it seem too fly as well!.
That's all for now folks, see you at the dinner.

.......................................................................

After the fiesta racers had all gone home for their Sunday dinners there were a few sailors still there, ie Rob and his friend Alan sailing their "J" Class yachts.

You may have noticed that there are some pictures on the club's Facebook page that are not on this site!, that is because I have a new App on my phone that allows me to take pictures at the lake and publish them on the Facebook page in real time, in other words whilst I'm still at the lake, so keep your eye on the facebook site as well as here, you might be on there.
This is one taken and published on the day.

Last visited

The last time I visited the lake was Tuesday 6th May 2014.
There were the usual regulars in attendance with their "J" class yachts and also Le Commodore with one of his Big naval vessels, he described it as a sloop, but not being a naval man I will leave that to you more knowledge guys!, enough to say it is to Alan's usual standard with plenty of detailing on board.

There as usual is Dave's USS battleship in the background

Here are some of the notes from the exhibition Sec about the arrangements for the Lyme Park Do in June, it will soon be upon us before we know it, where did March and April go??.

You will hopefully notice that there is a tab at the top under the header that will remain there until after the event so you can refer to the arrangements without scrolling back to this post every time!.

Lyme Park Exhibition 15th. June 2014
Guidance notes

After some discussion we are again going to be able to enjoy a day’s sailing at Lyme Park this year. This will be in conjunction with a major event at Lyme Park itself on Father’s Day the 15th. June, which they do each year. They will be staging a number of attractions and activities on the day and we will be one of them, i.e. we are there to enhance the Public’s day and make it more interesting and enjoyable for them, consequently we will have to fit in with their ideas on the subject, although in reality they are being as flexible as they can.
Therefore it is absolutely imperative that we comply with their wishes, which I realise will make problems for some of our disabled members, but if we want to get back there then we will have to try and work round it. If this goes well they are already considering the option of another day in late September.
We will be sailing on not one but two lakes, namely the Mill Pond Lake by the tea rooms which we used to use before, and also the Garden Reflections Lake behind the Hall. They will NOT allow any IC engines or fast speed boats, anything else is fine. We are expected to engage with the public and to be friendly and approachable at all times. Mention at the entrance that you are with our Club as an Exhibitor and parking is free.
Mill Pond Lake
Arrive 08.30hrs, vehicles have access to the pond until 10.30hrs when they all MUST be parked in the main car park. This includes members who are blue badge holders and/or NT members. For blue badge holders an area of the main coach park will be roped off nearest to the lake. There will be a Lyme Park electric buggy available to shuttle people back and forth. It is essential that members of the public who are also blue badge holders have access to the limited parking area by the lake. The path from the timber yard to the play area must not be obstructed. We will have our Gazebo erected on the small grassy area which we used before. Launching can take place directly from the water’s edge by the path.
Vehicles will not be allowed back by the lake until after 16.00hrs, please aim to vary the time so that all cars are not there at the same time.
Garden Reflections Lake
Arrive 08.30hrs and drive up to the main Hall and through the gates, to the right hand corner entrance by the large wrought iron railings, a member of the garden team will open the gate. There will be a large Lyme marquee on the lawn to the right of the Hall, we have 3 tables (they will supply) for our display purposes, heavy boats can be transported down the path by car, BUT NOT ON THE GRASS. All vehicles must then be removed to the main car park by 10.30hrs. Again a buggy or minibus will be available for those who need it. Finish time/comments as other lake.
It is around 50 yards from the marquee to the lake at the rear of the Hall across the main lawn, so either bring a ‘light weight’ boat or a trolley if you want to sail on it. The garden lake is around 5feet deep in the middle but shelves off to nothing at the gravelled edge so keep deep keeled boats for the Mill Pond. I suggest you bring a pair of ‘wellies’ anyway. For those not familiar with the Park, to get up to the Hall you have to climb a steep stepped slope from the car park once you have parked, which is about 100+ yards to their main marquee – so ensure you don’t forget anything when dropping off.
Any queries please give me a call.

Bob Abell....News at Ten....Haydock Park Model Boat Show 2013

Bob Abell....News at Ten....Haydock Park Model Boat Show 2013

Went to the show, with the Missus, as she likes the horses!......but there was none to be seen, obviously!

We didn't actually go to see the models, this year, as we were on a mission to meet Paul Thomason. Paul is designing a range of easy build launches, which he intends to sell on the ModelBoats Magazine website in aid of charity

The writer has volunteered to build the prototype model and the show was ideal for a progress meeting.

Couple of our members showing interest there Bob!.

The model was placed adjacent to our very nice club stand....Well done, chaps!

Alas we missed meeting each other by 5 minutes!.....Ships passing in the night, springs to mind!

Back to the show....

We enjoyed the show very much. The exhibition was spread over about a dozen halls! They were very, comfy, well lit and nicely arranged, with plenty of space, to stand and stare!

The food counters were very nice, one for bacon butties etc and another was the restaurant type, with cooked meals being served.....and very nice too

There were two portable inflateable pools demonstrating the various model types of models.
Hovercraft put on a spectacular display this year,

There were about twenty club stands and quite a few trade stands, Arthur Barlow made sure the visitors went through the trade stand halls first

Some of the models were of outstanding quality, especially the Russian show stands

We enjoyed meeting up with old friends, Les Jones, Dave Wooley, Arthur Barlow John Dowd and some familiar faces, names of which, lost in time!

Verdict......One of the best shows we've been to, and will definitely be going again, next year!

See you there........Bob Abell

Thanks again for the report Bob, don't know how you do it for the price!.

That's all for now folks, getting squared away after my week in Scotland.

Colwyn Bay regatta, News at Ten, Duckie!.

What a wonderful day it turned out to be for the Colwyn Bay Mayors regatta!.
After setting off from home early in cloudy weather, it soon brightened up as we got into Cheshire and beyond.
On arrival (after stopping at McDonalds on the way) we were met by old friend of our's and our club, Ray Benson who guided us to a nice parking spot, there was a Pop festival on at the park and they were trying to get £5 out of people to park!.
I'm glad to report that there were quite a few of our club members there with their wives as well enjoying the weather and the good company, Alan, Colin and Pam, Bob and Joyce, Charlie, Kean to mention a few as well as some of our newer members!.
Our Vice.

Ray did introduce me to a chap who had visited our Etherow venue that had had a non too nice experience whilst visiting, he said no one out of (four sailors)  was interested in speaking to him when he wanted to know about starting up in the hobby and perhaps joining the club, that was soon rectified as I made sure everyone of our members there introduced themselves to him and his family, bet he wished he'd never mentioned it, still can't let that kind of thing be passed round, gives the club a bad name doesn't it.
I think every club has a few grumpy's don't they, and unfortunately this chap met all ours on the same day!.
On to the boats.
Still setting up

Some new types of signage coming onto the scene, showing boats of their club members.

Can be used like this or indoors at shows.

The unusual.

Rigor Mortis

elegant.

The highlight of the day for me was this sinking ship

Finished up just the bows sticking up out of the water!, then popped up again, no doubt some type of submarine mechanism inside!.

But there again, I tell a lie that was the second highlight of the day, the main highlight was dinner at
"Le Campa Restaurant"

where Bob, Joyce, Charlie, Pepe and myself had a nice cooked meal and at a very reasonabell price, having to listen to each other nattering on and putting the world to rights!.
Nice one Joyce!.

Well thats all for now, hope you enjoyed yourself as much as we did if you went and if you didn't manage to get there this might give you an idea of what you missed.
Can't wait for next year.

Nearly forgot here is another DO you might like to attend and take your good ladies to, its by the seaside again!.

Could be a another good DO!.
That's all folks.

Day 2 at Etherow, Lifeboat weekend.2012

Day two started off with the current dull showery weather we are having at the moment, but it didn't put off the members who turned up early to set up the display stands, many thanks to them from the committee, especially Chris who needed plenty of help with all the arrangements he had made to make the day the success it turned out to be in the end with the weather brightening up and later even the sun coming out, great to be Abell to put every thing away dry isn't it.

They say a picture is worth a thousand words, so here are some of my efforts, if you boat isn't here, sorry but I can only be in one place at a time!.

Our Ken's display.
 Jet Ski
 Launch Ramp
Les Jones stand setting up, from Holyhead!

Not many of these around MK1, with original livery!

As Coca Cola say's "It's the real thing"

Southport Boat

 A tracked vehicle
Terry's Punt Boat, maiden voyage, see video.

The real thing!.

A video of some of our club boats

The chap was there again with his Frogmen boat, posted yesterday and attracted many admiring modellers!
Thanks to Phil for the use and his commentary on the big lake, for the lifeboats that had arrived, I know there had been breakdowns and bad weather, so many thanks to all who turned up on the day.
Mustn't forget to thank Roy and his wife Ada for manning the refreshments bar all day in the clubhouse, they did a great job.
If I've forgot to thank anyone, your efforts were still appreciated.

And last but not least Chas and Dave, sorry that should be Bob and Dave.
Bob of Great Eastern TV fame and Dave Woolley the photographer from Model Boats Magazine, hopefully will give us a nice complimentary write up in the magazine!.

Video of Lifeboats on the day.

And there you have it, If you wasn't abell to come for what ever reason, at least now you can see what you missed on both days!, and if you came thank you once again.
One man and his dog, sent to me from Ray at Colwyn Bay!.
Don't get many of me and him.

Another excellent event in our diary over!
Until next year all the best from the Etherow Model Boat Club.

Jubilee Day at Etherow.

After a cold cloudy day on Sunday for the Fiesta Racing, it was a nice surprise to arrive at the lake nice and early to find things going well with the set up for the day's entertainments and the weather a lot brighter.
Chris the Exhibition Sec was well into the arranging of the event, unfortunately he slipped and injured his ankle, but he soldiered on and though his ankle swelled up like a balloon wouldn't stop for a rest until everything was just right.
It continued to get better as the day progressed and the crowds started to arrive, the Model military vehicle stand  and Bob The Abell with his Great Eastern Ship were the first two stands you saw as you came into the area, both were of great interest to the crowd with plenty of questions and answers.
The buttie wagon was a good attraction with great food and great value for money as you could tell by the crowds queueing up for food and drinks.
Setting up! with mine host's.

Your's truly had beans on toast in Bob's camper van for dinner!
No after's Bob

All donations and sponsorship monies were for the Manchester Children's Hospital and the Help for Hero's funds.
The video attached is mostly taken on the model boat lake as that's where most of our members interests lie as you will appreciate, though there is a couple of minutes on the big lake and a general view of the crowds.

What a great day it turned out to be, weather good, crowds hopefully digging down in their pockets for the good causes it was in aid off and  plenty of members with their boats on the water and don't forget we have another big day coming up soon,
23th and 24th June The International Lifeboat Rally.

This has been another great event in this years diary, what a good year we are having and its only June!, hope to see more of you here on the 23th and 24th June, lets show the public there are plenty of model boats as well as lifeboats in the club.
It will be lifeboats on the big lake and members on our own lake sailing their models.

Latest News

The last Club Meeting saw a good attendance and the Commodore Chris gave a good talk on his latest project which he is covering on the outside with lytho plate which he said was used by the printing industry.

There was also a request from the yacht club for volunteers and helpers for the up coming
Raft Races event on Bank Holiday Monday the 4th of June.,
small things like making sure everyone is handed out a life jacket before going on the water, and anyone help man or woman the tea bar.

Always seem to have a bit of bad news as well don't we!, yesterday George Barrett phoned me to say he wouldn't be down to the club for a while as he was knocked off his motorbike, car going 10 mph he going 5 mph, as always the motorcyclist comes off worst don't they, more sinned against than sin, (I know I've been into motor cycling)
George sustained a broken ankle and is in a plaster cast, he is going to Stepping Hill  Hospital again to-day so they can have another look once the swelling as gone down.
I'm sure he will be glad of a chat now and then from his mates at the club and I'm sure he will be Abell to get a lift to the meetings again soon!.
On a lighter note Bob Abell sent me this picture, as we are both into photography we were just saying the other day we never see baby Mandarin Ducks and here is his picture from yesterday.

I know we don't like the duck poo on the landing stage but you have to like these and you don't see them at our end of the lake so they are not the guilty poo'ers hey.
Nice picture Bob!

So don't forget this coming Monday the 4th June Raft racing event on the big lake, our lake will still   be available for us to show the public our hobby and efforts in the model world.
...................................................................................................
Don't forget folks, every boat can be is a mine sweeper, once!
PS
Just spoke to George and asked how he went on at the hospital. they'd phoned him this morning and told him not to go to-day and leave it until Monday morning and go to the fracture clinic then, there will be too much swelling to-day they said.
He has broken his leg at the bottom near the ankle, it seems.
The other driver as admitted liability to the Police and Georges insurance people so that's a good point!

Message from the Commorore

Message from the Commodore
A happy New Year to all our members and partners.  I wish everyone good health and happiness this year and hope that despite the economic doom and gloom that surrounds us these days we can still enjoy our sailing and social events.
Perhaps the relatively warm, dry day enjoyed on the occasion of the December frostbite sail was a good omen for 2012.  There was a big attendance with a large number of boats on the water as well.  Thanks to Mike for organising the catering – teas, coffees, hot soup and mince pies – in the clubhouse and to Glyn for the BBQ on the landing stage.  We have a number of events, including a new major exhibition at the beginning of March, which I hope will be similarly well supported.
Exhibitions take time to organise. Space needs to be planned. For this reason it is necessary for Chris Guttridge, our exhibition secretary, to ask members to commit themselves and/or their models well in advance of the exhibition date. For the Haydock Park event (formerly the Birchwood show) participating clubs are invited to address a particular theme.  Last year it was cargo vessels; this year it will be tugs.  If anyone has a tug hiding in their loft or workshop here is the moment to service it in readiness for the August Show. Other types of vessels can also be included in a club’s display.
Later this year we will be holding the annual commodore’s challenge; so to give ample time for preparations I will convey now the broad outlines of the task. It’s a straight runner project. Good luck and I hope there will be plenty of entries to make it a fun event.
The Commodore’s Challenge 2012
Build a straight running boat to the following specifications:
·       length:   36 inches minimum to 60 inches maximum
·       Beam: 4 inches minimum
·       Motor: 540
·       Battery: 4v to 7.2v
·       Single propeller
The boat will be aimed at a target; the highest score will be the winner.

New Year

A Happy New Year
to all our members,
may your props never come off, your rudders keep turning and the wind keeps blowing.

Check out the  Year planner in the corridor of the boat house for coming events for this year, hopefully it will be as good as the past one for you.
Have you thought of your next build, lets hear from you with your ideas!.
Don't forget to save postage and bring your fees for this year to the next meeting, touchy subject I know but someone has to bring it up.
Still a good deal even with the increase.
..................................................................................................
A Teddy bear got a job on the council road gang. All went well on Monday, Tuesday likewise, but on Wednesday after his lunch break discovered his pick had been stolen.
He complained to the foreman who was undismayed and had the obvious answer.
"It's Wednesday", he said "That's the day the Teddy bears have their Picks nicked"

Boom Boom!

That's all folks.
