Day 2 at Etherow, Lifeboat weekend.2012

Day two started off with the current dull showery weather we are having at the moment, but it didn't put off the members who turned up early to set up the display stands, many thanks to them from the committee, especially Chris who needed plenty of help with all the arrangements he had made to make the day the success it turned out to be in the end with the weather brightening up and later even the sun coming out, great to be Abell to put every thing away dry isn't it.

They say a picture is worth a thousand words, so here are some of my efforts, if you boat isn't here, sorry but I can only be in one place at a time!.

The chap was there again with his Frogmen boat, posted yesterday and attracted many admiring modellers!
Thanks to Phil for the use and his commentary on the big lake, for the lifeboats that had arrived, I know there had been breakdowns and bad weather, so many thanks to all who turned up on the day.
Mustn't forget to thank Roy and his wife Ada for manning the refreshments bar all day in the clubhouse, they did a great job.
If I've forgot to thank anyone, your efforts were still appreciated.

And last but not least Chas and Dave, sorry that should be Bob and Dave.
Bob of Great Eastern TV fame and Dave Woolley the photographer from Model Boats Magazine, hopefully will give us a nice complimentary write up in the magazine!.

Video of Lifeboats on the day.

And there you have it, If you wasn't abell to come for what ever reason, at least now you can see what you missed on both days!, and if you came thank you once again.
One man and his dog, sent to me from Ray at Colwyn Bay!.
Don't get many of me and him.

Day One of Etherow's Regatta/Lifeboat weekend June 2012

Day one of the Etherow Model Boat club weekend, was a bit of a damp squib really, not for want of trying on the part of the members I might add. The weather was against us from the start and consequently the visitors were not there except for the regulars I recognised from our normal visits.
here are a few pictures of the first day.
First a visitor from the Midlands "Dawn Dive" a video at the end of this post.

These all from the Lifeboat Enthusiasts Soc.

Some of the entrants
And last but not least Chris's Low Loader.

And here is the video taken on the day, the "Best of the Day" for my money!.

May I thank on behalf of the Committee, all the members who turned up to-day to help with the setting up of the stands etc, Hopefully to-morrow will be kinder to us!.

Lifeboat day

Just a reminder that it's our lifeboat weekend this weekend!.

Hope to see plenty of you there, bring your model boats for our club stand and a sail of course!.

We will need people there early to help put up the stands and gazebo's, so if you can help for the early start or packing away at the evening on either of the two day's that would be great.
Many hands make light work.

Another good club meeting

Last night saw another successful meeting at the clubhouse.
There was a call for volunteer's for the next weekend event, which is the International Lifeboat Rally, see below for details, people to set up either day and people to get the stuff down and packed away afterwards, if you can't get to one thing, perhaps you could help at another!.
Saturday we need a good showing of our club boats, not only lifeboats, but a good variety of models on the small lake to show off to the public.
Sunday mainly Lifeboats on the big lake but still our models on the small lake, you saw the interest shown by the public at the raft race event the other week, lets show them more still.
There will be stands for model display as well as the benches on the landing stage and on the water!
The Raft race generated a total (up to now) of £600 to the Manchester children's Hospital and another £600 to the Help 4 Hero's, both very worthwhile funds.

After the usual announcements there was a couple of get well cards sent round for George Barrett (motor bike accident) and Jim brown ( General ill health).
I'm sure you will join me in wishing them both a speedy recovery.

The night  in general was a talk by Bob (Mr TV) Abell, well actually it was Bob and his boat the Great Eastern and a talk by your's truly, I think it went well, I enjoyed it anyway and judging by the crowds round afterwards asking Bob different questions instead of the usual mad rush for the door so did most people, the picture is not a good reflection of the numbers there, but taken at the end of the night when I could get back near Bob and the boat.
It was surprising the number of members that hadn't seen GE, though it has been on our lake before, on TV and at Ellesmere Model Boat Show this year.

Chris the Commodore ended the night by thanking Bob for his dedication and expertise in the model build and his bringing the club to the attention of the Model boat world.
Thanks from me Bob as the members Rep for an enjoyABELL last few months helping out with GE and the beans on toast at the dinner times in the camper van.
That's all folk's see you on the Lifeboat Day, if not before!.
Peter (Duckie) Teal.

Tug boat Cruiser

Tuesday I was at the lake with the Fur ball Pepe and I was surprised to see only two yachtsmen there Andy and Colin, though a couple of others came a short while later, George and Alan!
Alan got his Minesweeper on the water and had a good sweep round in case of any mines (shopping trollies)
M1166

Rear view with sweeping tackle, plenty of detail there, but that's always the case with Alan's boats.

Then after rigging up it was the turn of the "J" class yachts which are beautiful and graceful to watch, they are on the following video!

Alan's second boat on the water was his tug "Cruiser" and its barge, as you can see Alan runs a Spektrum Tranny, 10 models in it's memory, no need for any others.

Hooked up

Full steam ahead

Fair bow wave there.

And here are all the boats and sailors on the day!

To-night at the club meeting (13th June) it's, Mr Bob (BBC TV)  Abell himself, giving a talk on his Great Eastern Paddler which some of you will have seen on the "Coast" program on BBC 2 which was screened on the 20th May at 2100hrs, so you can still catch it on BBC Iplayer if you want!. Or you may have been at the Jubilee Event at the lake, if you missed both of these events, now's the time to catch up with the trials and tribulations of the Trans-Atlantic laying of the first telegraph cable, and the start of the communications industry between GB and the USA.

Well that's it for now perhaps see you to-night!

Punt Gun boat.

Another first for the club?
Terry Burnett sent me this post of a boat he has just finished,
it's a punt gun boat!.
To be honest I didn't know what one of these was, even after looking at the pictures Terry sent, so I looked it up on Wikipedia and there it was.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Punt_gun
At the bottom of the page on this link there is a video you can click on to see a guy firing one of these guns, but notice it is well tied down!

I even found a video of these boats on the net, see here

Even though we have a million wildfowl (well it seems that many) at Etherow I don't think Terry will be able to test a working gun on his model, though the boat it is motorised, Wayne the head warden would be a bit miffed.
Here is Terry's details of the build.
................................................................................................
I have just finished a Gun Punt for your consideration.
Designed from contemporary photographs
Scratch built
Plywood construction (with frames) fibreglass lining
Stainless rudder
Pear rubbing strip
I decided to exaggerate the features by extending the nose and gun and fitting an outrunner brushless motor, the originals were rowed through the fens.
No idea how this will perform so I have fitted a programable speed controller

Nice pictures as well!
That's it for to-day, hope to see you all at various times at the lake, though to-day looks a non runner with the weather wet and windy again.
Hope the ankle is a bit easier now Chris!.
Peter.

Thanks to all who came to sail, see you all next month.

David Lee.

Also  received this picture from Colin Harrison sailing his "J" class with another six guys in the club, don't know who the seventh was he is either well in the lead or so far back, he's not in the picture.

Its always nice to receive news items from others, rather than just my views, keep it up guys.
................................................

And to finish to-day here is a video from off the net of a chap testing his boat for self righting, seems to have got it right
1:12 scale Interceptor model tested for self righting.

That's all folk's

Asked why he smoked 100 cigarettes a day, Harry replied,
"Coughing is the only exercise I get"

Jubilee Day at Etherow.

After a cold cloudy day on Sunday for the Fiesta Racing, it was a nice surprise to arrive at the lake nice and early to find things going well with the set up for the day's entertainments and the weather a lot brighter.
Chris the Exhibition Sec was well into the arranging of the event, unfortunately he slipped and injured his ankle, but he soldiered on and though his ankle swelled up like a balloon wouldn't stop for a rest until everything was just right.
It continued to get better as the day progressed and the crowds started to arrive, the Model military vehicle stand  and Bob The Abell with his Great Eastern Ship were the first two stands you saw as you came into the area, both were of great interest to the crowd with plenty of questions and answers.
The buttie wagon was a good attraction with great food and great value for money as you could tell by the crowds queueing up for food and drinks.
Setting up! with mine host's.

Your's truly had beans on toast in Bob's camper van for dinner!
No after's Bob

All donations and sponsorship monies were for the Manchester Children's Hospital and the Help for Hero's funds.
The video attached is mostly taken on the model boat lake as that's where most of our members interests lie as you will appreciate, though there is a couple of minutes on the big lake and a general view of the crowds.

What a great day it turned out to be, weather good, crowds hopefully digging down in their pockets for the good causes it was in aid off and  plenty of members with their boats on the water and don't forget we have another big day coming up soon,
23th and 24th June The International Lifeboat Rally.

This has been another great event in this years diary, what a good year we are having and its only June!, hope to see more of you here on the 23th and 24th June, lets show the public there are plenty of model boats as well as lifeboats in the club.
It will be lifeboats on the big lake and members on our own lake sailing their models.
