Outdoor Club Night, 25th June 2014.

Outdoor Club Night, 25th June 2014.
For a change it was decided to have a earlier BBQ and outdoor event rather than wait until it was cold and damp later in the year, had enough of that up to now haven't we.

John doing a good job as always in the bar, trying to fit in a sail as well!.

Doesn't look many here but the Gannett's are queuing up for the burgers  and hot dogs, the rest are sailing on the two lakes.

Volvo man and his better half.

 Get that down your neck.

Nice to see some of the ladies in attendance, having a night off from the cooking no doubt.

Looks serious this

The highlight of the evening for me was the warship "Scarab" quietly slipping through the water and though it was built on two planks of balsa and completely flat bottomed sailed very well, even though the Club 500 racers and Bob the Builders Slo mo 2 were creating some nice swells it sailed serenely on.
Built by member Paul Blyth, who at the Ellesmere Show earlier in the year claimed a Gold and a Silver award for his Warships.
Paul.

Scarab's bottom, props recessed in hull.
See more in the video!.

Another good night and a big thanks to Mike again for getting his apron on and doing the cooking and not forgetting his efforts in the shopping before hand as well.

Saturday afternoon at the lake.

Saturday afternoon at the lake.
As promised in the last post here is the afternoon session.
In attendance was,

David Swift and John Glynn
David was sailing nice Fishing Boat and John was sailing a beautiful Smit Nederland which you can see from the closeup here is a fine looking model and sits great on the water, you get the feel that it really can pull a big ship in to dock!.
Shame we haven't got a big barge to tow round the lake with a couple of tugs , perhaps an idea,  place to store it perhaps is the problems hey!

Anyway see for yourself in the video.

Slo mo 2 at Etherow.

This Saturday saw Bob Abell and myself at the lake to trial run Bob's boat "Slo mo 2" which you may have been following the build on the Model Boats magazine Forum.
The hull is the same hull as the Vintage Broads cruiser, "Ellie" with a new top scratchbuilt by Bob and incorporating a driver with moving arms to guide the boat.
Bob had been having trouble getting two brushless motors to work in his boat, the outcome we found out the previous day was that one of the ESC was faulty, usually the way isn't it, especially as this was Bob's first venture into the world of  "Brushless" so didn't need the added stress of a faulty component.
Still all's well that ends well and here is the finished boat in all it's glory and I've been happy to have been a part of this venture into the unknown for me as well as Bob.

Ships first Mate testing system

Excuse me for the second one of me but I did supply the champagne for the launching

Then whilst I did my Number One stint driving the boat, Bob took these stills with him camera, better than mine!. What a pleasure to sail this very fast boat, I'm only used to sailing the slow stuff.

There you go a very successful trial and Bob went home like a dog with two tails.

Watch this space for the next installment of my Saturday at the lake!.

Meander, Anteo and Cariad.

A typical Thursday Meeting at our club this week was well attended again with a mixture of motorised boats and yachts.

Boats of both Garth and Eric pictured, were some of the boats of interest I found there today,

A video of both their boats, plus Andy the Secretary's Clipper.

I bit of a pause at the moment as I watch England hopefully get into the next stage of the World cup competition!.
That was some hope, it finished with the panel of experts saying that Italy have to win their next two matches, perhaps they should have added if pigs start flying as well we still might have a chance. Doesn't seem much of a victory to me if you have to rely on other teams winning to get you back in the running, still I should be remaining impartial here shouldn't I!!.

Well at least it was a good day, called at Bob Abell's on the way home from the lake and he has finally got his Twin brushless motors to work together in his Slo Mo 2 so that was good as well, it seems that one of the ESC's was faulty which doesn't help when you are setting up a system for the first time!.
Pity about the evening!.

Next events both new for diary!,

Return to Lyme Park!

Well, after a few years wandering in the wilderness, we have finally returned to Lyme park, well not really wandering in the wilderness, got carried away there, we have been to other places in the mean time.
It was due to our new exhibition secretary's efforts than we are finally back to this lovely venue.
There was some hiccups at first with the promised equipment not being there but I'm sure that that wasn't down to Gordon, perhaps the park's new events manager not being aware of the size of our club's fleet.
The weather looked a bit off putting at first and the crowds weren't in evidence, but after an early dinner in the Cafe the rain stopped and the crowds stuffed with Sunday dinners appeared to admire our fleet.
Apart from our own club members in attendance, Ray Benson and Sid both ex Etherow members and their wives all the way from Colwyn Bay, (we will be returning the favour next month don't forget.).
Also there were Gareth Jones (Of Model Boats magazine forum fame)  and wife Elizabeth (a keen Yachtswoman), from over the hill in Yorkshire, and they added to the day with this superb model of Nessie,

Seen having  a go on the steering course, but more of that later in the video's.

The pictures and video's show more and a better idea of the interest shown on the day, so without more ado sit back and watch the following video show.

Nessie from Yorkshire?.

"Ellie" from the forum of Model Boat Magazine

Slo Mo 2 from the hull Design of "Ellie" and additions from the thoughts of Bob the Builder!, with a nice twist at the end!.

Last but not least a selection of Photo's and short video's for the general feel of the event.

We had a few sailors on the top lake, didn't manage to get up there myself but got these pictures off Gordon.

John Senior with his Narrow boat

Gordons steamer and followers

 George's steamer

George Barrett's narrow boat

Well that's it, I think it was a great first event for our return to this lovely venue and hopefully we will be back in September, with a better understanding with the park people of our requirements.

Knackered after a great day out

Hope you enjoy the post and have seen your boat somewhere here!, if not perhaps next time hey.

"Brutus" and "Ellie" at Etherow

Over the past few months our Bob Abell of Great Eastern fame, has teamed up with Paul Thomason of the Model Boats magazine forum and with Paul designing the boats and Bob building them to check out the correctness of the plans before Paul was ready to sell them for charity, today was the crunch time with Bob and myself as one one mate and video recorder. we have the maiden voyage of both boats "Brutus" and "Ellie"
"Ellie" Vintage Broads Cruiser

Brutus with Bob ready for the first run. You will notice I provided the champers for the launch.

Here is the video of the "Brutus"

The "Ellie" vintage broads cruiser

I'm sure Bob has had a good time with these projects, I certainly have watching their progress and today's outing at the lake, hope you like the video's, they are both on YouTube  to watch at anytime.

Don't forget it's our return to Lyme Park very shortly, hope you have got your boats all dusted down and spruced up for showing. You can check out the Exhibition Sec's notes in the tabs at the top.

1st June 2014 meeting, Plus Fiesta results

The 1st June meeting at the lake was a beautiful sunny day and though the Fiesta sailors were perhaps not too happy with the wind conditions the following sailors in the video were quite happy and here are some of the boats on the day afterwards.
The boats in the video were all belonging to the Higham Brothers, Alan and Eddie.
The Fairey Huntsman belonged to Alan and went a fair lick across the water and then it was Eddie's Princess a shop bought boat with some nicely modified parts on the rudder you will see on the video, what else with these two modellers do you expect.
The Coast Guard cutter is a boat you might have seen before in the steering Comp, Eddie scratchbuilt this for the competitions and it's nice to see a proper superstructure on it instead of just a box structure, very nice!
