Outdoor Club Night, 25th June 2014.

Outdoor Club Night, 25th June 2014.
For a change it was decided to have a earlier BBQ and outdoor event rather than wait until it was cold and damp later in the year, had enough of that up to now haven't we.

John doing a good job as always in the bar, trying to fit in a sail as well!.

Doesn't look many here but the Gannett's are queuing up for the burgers  and hot dogs, the rest are sailing on the two lakes.

Volvo man and his better half.

 Get that down your neck.

Nice to see some of the ladies in attendance, having a night off from the cooking no doubt.

Looks serious this

The highlight of the evening for me was the warship "Scarab" quietly slipping through the water and though it was built on two planks of balsa and completely flat bottomed sailed very well, even though the Club 500 racers and Bob the Builders Slo mo 2 were creating some nice swells it sailed serenely on.
Built by member Paul Blyth, who at the Ellesmere Show earlier in the year claimed a Gold and a Silver award for his Warships.
Paul.

Scarab's bottom, props recessed in hull.
See more in the video!.

Another good night and a big thanks to Mike again for getting his apron on and doing the cooking and not forgetting his efforts in the shopping before hand as well.

Colwyn Bay Model Boat Club – Mayor’s Cup Regatta
Sunday 13th July 2014
Colwyn Bay MBC are again holding their regatta this year and we have been invited over for the day to sail on their lake behind the Colwyn bay Civic Offices.
There is plenty of free parking within yards of the lake and there is no admission charge.
The ‘Commodore’s Regatta Trophy’ is open to any visitor who displays a boat and fills in an application form. There are two classes, 1 – actually sailing on the lake, 2 – static display.
Arrivals from 08.00am, most people depart around 4.00/5.00pm.

For those who have not been before, go down A55 and turn off at junction 22, left on to ‘The Promenade’, to island. 4th exit ‘Abergele Road’, turn right at Civic Offices to end of road. Alternatively plug LL29 8AR in to your ‘Sat Nav’.

You will notice that this event is in the tabs a the top of the page so you don't keep having to scroll back here

Fathers Day on Mothering Sunday

Mothering Sunday 30th March 2014.
It was a nice sunny day at the lake and there were quite a few fathers sailing on the day, there was even a light wind to please the yachtsmen later in the day, hope the members remembered what day is was or there would be trouble when they got home.
The video was taken about 11-00am and the first one was Rob Gibb's new lifeboat and there was the champers ready to launch  her on her first sail to the new owner, though he hadn't used Tank type steering before Rob was taking it a bit easy on the speed, but it still looked impressive on the water.
Then it was the turn of Mr Secretary, Andy with his Model Slipway, Kawkab Class Fast patrol boat, he was telling me that the figure on the boat was one he found that used to belong to his son, who has now grown up and is serving in the Army himself and done two tours in Afghanistan, where does the time go and don't they soon grow up and have families of their own.
Last but not least a nice little fishing boat, ideal for the older member who finds it hard to lift the bigger heavier boats in and out of the water, we would all like to have bigger and better boats!, but there again its best to be prudent isn't it and know your limitations.
Here is the video!.

Another nice day in the beautiful setting of our club's venue, I don't think some people realise how lucky we are to have such a nice location to sail in and have a ready made audience to admire your efforts.

Thats all for now, see you down at the lake again.

Yesterday at the lake. 22nd August 2013

Yesterday at the lake, there was a good turnout and the weather was kind to the sailors again.
Of note straight away to me was Alan Breeze's HMS Kite, the type of boat which I'd not seen before, there again I'm only a relatively new model boat builder so for all the other members in my category here are the details of Alan's build, which I was told by him is still an on going project
The new model inspector!.

HMS Kite is an ANT Class Gunboat, with a Armstrong Whitworth gun
This is a Semi scratch build, says Alan.

Further research on the internet came up with these extra interesting facts on this unusual boat.
HMS Kite 1872 Royal Navy Flat Iron Gunboat
Our moulding for HMS Kite is for a 19th. Century Victorian Navy flat iron gunboat, commonly known as a "Rendel" Flat Iron. One of a class of 22 vessels of the "Ant" class, designed by Devonport Dockyard and built by 'Napiers' during 1890/1, she was commissioned in 1872 and sold out of service in 1920.

Whilst at the lake noticed that the damage done to the boathouse by vandals this month had been repaired and nicely done by Mike Hodgson to his usual high standard , I'm sure all the members will join me in a vote of thanks to Mike once again for his sterling service to the club!.

There will be a couple of visitors to the lake this weekend from the Colwyn Bay club both ex-members of Etherow so give them a good welcome, as we always get one at their club waters!.

Haydock Park show this weekend!!

Ps, Check out the "For sale" section.
