Poynton Model Show 6/7th Dec 2014.

Poynton Model Show 6/7th Dec.

Word is definitely spreading about this new local show from last year. Originally aimed at the model railway enthusiast it has now enlarged itself to include both model aircraft and boats where we have a major presence. This year we had a ten table display plus setting up tables for four swimming pool sessions over the two days, with another secondary display area on the Saturday.
In addition we were asked to have another area showing boat construction and Geoff Garside did a sterling job with the new compressed foam medium (he almost finished the boat over the weekend) with a great deal of interest being shown from the public (not to mention our own members). Well done Geoff – I understand that he has ‘volunteered’ to give a talk at the club in the New Year.
Saturday was an interesting start, with sub-zero temperatures and much breaking into cars to actually get to the Leisure Centre at Poynton. After setting up we waited for the doors to open whilst preparing some boats to sail in the swimming pool later. I did get some well-deserved stick for failing to mention before the show that bacon ‘sarnies’ and lunch were provided as I returned from the canteen with a juicy mouthful of bacon – sorry guys – I will try harder next year.
Roy Cragg and Andy Quick put on a great display of warships which were really appreciated by the public, and it was eye-opening to note their breadth of naval knowledge when talking to other ex-naval guys. I certainly know where to go for answers to queries about ‘grey’ boats when I have a problem now.
The usual stalwarts brought along some really impressive general boats and submarines, our Commodore Alan, Ken Pheasey, George Barrett, Mike Street, Andy Glen, and John Jones. Even young Ben made an appearance on the Sunday and enjoyed a sail in the pool. If I missed anyone out I apologise but it was a bit hectic, sincere thanks to everyone who gave up their weekend to help out.
All in all a great weekend which hopefully produced a new member or two and waved the Etherow flag, which after all is what it really is all about (plus we had a laugh or two). We must be doing something right as they want us back next year with twice the space (20 tables plus!) so we will have more room to show off our skills and put up a proper display with floodlights and more detail.

Cold Cold Saturday!.

Cold Cold Saturday

Went to the lake this morning and I wasn't disappointed to see no one there, it was quite cool and come to that there wasn't many in the park!, I had the Cafe to myself and my solitude was only broken by Abdul (The Wallet man) and his Carer and even they didn't have their boat with them.
Not that it mattered as most of the lake was frozen over, and from the headlines in the paper this morning we are going to have a white christmas, so don't forget the hammers for frostbite sail on the 27th Dec, always the day after Boxing day!.
No doubt most of the members were at the Poynton Show Today and Tomorrow!, much warmer in there!

Still a few places for the birds to swim in.

As there was no boats to photograph, how about this little fellow searching round the benches for any food scraps that Trevor might have dropped from his sandwiches, I suppose it doesn't matter if its got garlic on this weather, anything to keep the energy up!

Also there was King Tut, Tut, Tut, looking out for his swans

And there's a message for you all on the notice board

To put you in the mood for Christmas!, use your imagination and hear "White Christmas playing in the background.

Club Christmas Dinner 2014

Last night, 2nd December 2014 was the Club Christmas Dinner at the same venue as last year, The Hare and Hounds at Werneth Low.
Luckily the cold weather that had moved in during the day wasn't too bad, as the road up to Werneth Low is quite steep coming in from the Compstall direction, but what a view from the top at the Pub, being a clear night you could see right across most of Greater Manchester, there again it was too cold to stand long admiring the view!.
Everyone at the Do seemed to enjoy themselves, we certainly did at our table.

The Abell Table.

 You moved, Bob!!

 Sec's table.

Lawrence's table

John's table

The Top Table, Commodore Al's

And there you have it, a good time was had by all and there was the usual raffle, thanks to Mike for getting all the prizes for that, there was the usual cry's of  "shake the bag up" after each draw, but that's what it is isn't it, the luck of the draw, I never seem to win anything so I'm never disappointed!.
Thanks to everyone who turned up and made it such a good night, sorry about the clarity of some of the pictures, but I'd forgot to bring my camera and Bob hadn't brought his IPad!, so it was down to my IPhone on the night, still you can see yourself here can't you.
Anyone else took pictures on the night, if you send me a copy I will add to this post.

In case I don't see some of you before Christmas here is my card from Pepe and I!.

Donations

Donations

Just a word to say thank you to the people who have made donations to the club recently.

Firstly;
Terry Miles for the paint for the Container and for the future refurbishments on the landing stage, ie the benches and seat's, better weather needed for these items to be done though!.

Secondly;
A big thank you for the trophy donation from Jacqueline Smith, you will have to wait for the AGM and awards night, to see what the committee will be awarding that for, but Commodore Alan tells me its a "Belter!"

There is going to be a better sign board on the landing stage in the new year, but as said before everything is slowing down for the winter, I was at the lake on Saturday and there was only one lone sailor there, Mr Jones and his Grandson, but they were enough to create interest for the passing public with their comments and camera's, so it  keeps the interest and publicity on the club.

Talking of publicity for the club!, check out Bob Abell's thread on Model Boats magazine

Not much going on at the lake this weather but you will get a good read here!, and it certainly puts the club on the map, everyone know's the club and its whereabouts these days.

Well that's it for now and once again a big thank you for all donations most gratefully received.
See some of you tomorrow night at the club Christmas dinner!.

Muggy, Damp day at the lake

Muggy, Damp day at the lake
Today at the lake it was drizzly, damp and not very nice though it didn't put off these hardy sailors, sorry if I didn't catch you all there, but didn't want my chest infection back with all the damp and cold.
Here is a video of the sailors that were there when I was there.

Commodore Al said that there were negotiations going on with the yacht club to have electrics put into our container and help with the yacht club's electrics too!.
The painting of the container will be held up at the moment with this weather, or we will be wasting your money with it blistering the first time it get's warm and coming off in big sheets!.
Not long before the Club Christmas dinner again, can't believe its a year since the last one, still time flies when you're having fun doesn't it, mind you at most of our ages it seem too fly as well!.
That's all for now folks, see you at the dinner.

Over the weekend,Nov 2014

Over the weekend, Nov 2014.

If you haven't noticed yet!, there are some of the events the club will be involved in next year in the tabs at the top of the site.

You will notice that there is a new Venue at Bugsworth Canal Basin, and Commodore Alan not the type to let the grass grow under his feet went to see for himself, and you of course!.

Had a run up to Bugsworth on Saturday, met one of the organisers a really nice spot looking forward to the event.
Commodore Al.

And a local watering hole next door, can't be bad!.

Thanks for that Commodore Al, looking forward to the event as well.

On the Sunday there was an Impromptu Steering event, which was a carry over from the event that should have been at Lyme Park Show earlier in the year but was rained off.

The Higham brothers plus Geoff and all those in the image took part, congratulations to the winners and participants, the weather didn't look too clever by the way they are wrapped up there, but still all smiling.

Thats all for now folks, feeling better now so will see you all back at the lake soon.

Poynton Show 2014.

Poynton Show 2014.

The Model Show – Poynton Leisure Centre, Yew Tree Lane, Poynton, Cheshire SK12 1PU
Sat.6th and Sun.7th December 2014

Following our attendance at last year’s show we have been invited back again to participate over the above weekend.
This year we have the added feature of being able to sail in an indoor heated swimming pool (a bit different from sailing on Etherow I expect) so all those with submarines will actually be able to see them underwater for a change.
This is a display for the public’s benefit who are attending the show and only those who bring boats for the weekend’s static exhibition and man the stand will qualify to sail in the pool. (Given that they are giving up the whole of their weekend I think this is only fair).
Sailing display times are; -     Saturday 11.45 – 12.30 and 16.15 – 17.00
                                                Sunday 12.00 – 13.00 and 15.00 – 16.00
As this is a public swimming pool which will be in use when we finish, can you please ensure that you thoroughly clean your boats before bringing them to ensure that none of Etherow Lake is left on the hull! I will provide clinical ‘wipes’ for your use at the pool, plastic overshoes will be provided by the show organisers. No boats will be permitted that leak anything into the water. Therefore no IC engines or steam engines.
Please remember to wear club badges/clothing etc. and if you intend to participate please let me know beforehand. As I expect this event to be oversubscribed the committee have decided that priority will be given to those who have helped out on this and other shows in the last twelve months, which again I feel is the fairest way of doing it.
If you have any other queries please talk to me.

Gordon Longworth – Exhibition Secretary.

For the present day, here are a few boats sailing on Thursday 6th Nov 2014
