A Tuesday in the park Plus Haydock park details.

Whilst in the park on Tuesday, found these boats being sailed by members in the nice hot sunshine. Though there wasn't much wind for the yachts everyone was in high spirits with the weather, with comments like "I can decorate when it's raining" and "the grass will still be there when I get home" my sentiments entirely!.

 Alan's fishing boat

David S's coast guard cutter, good turn of speed though only on 6Volts

Dave Lees warship USS Iowa

A nice Fiesta sailed by Andrew Spencer.

 Eric's dragon force.

Last but not least a small flotilla of late arrival babies a bit further down the lake away from the hussle and bussle of the crowds.

Next big event

Details

Haydock Park Racecourse - 23/24th Aug. 2014
Theme of this year is Naval Vessels and Submarines

Exhibitions and shows are coming thick and fast at this time of year, the next big one is the above show. They are a little stricter than most so everyone needs to be aware of the procedure if they intend to go and/or exhibit.
Exhibiting
If you are exhibiting on our club stand you will need separate passes for Saturday and Sunday, please see me. Boats should be delivered to the stand on Friday between 3.p.m, and 7.p.m., or on Saturday morning between 9 and 9.30.a.m. and should not depart until after the closing ceremony on Sunday.
Disabled parking will need to be applied for beforehand, again see me. Your disabled badge will also need to be displayed.
There are a number of competitions at the convention, all boats must have been made by the entrant. Anyone wanting to enter the various classes, please see me for details or maps to get there etc. as details must be submitted in advance of the show by 9th Aug.
Also I need to have all details of boats that you intend to exhibit, I will try and get as much as possible on club night but please contact me if necessary. Do remember that you just can’t turn up on the day if you are exhibiting, I need to know in advance so that I can send in their forms.
I have been asked by the organisers to remind all members that only a pass will provide free entrance to the show, and that only exhibitors will be provided with a pass. Being a member is not an automatic qualification for a pass.
The show itself is open between 10.a.m. and 5.pm. both days. Refreshments and snacks are available on site, as are disabled facilities. Admission is £6 for adults (without a pass), £2 for children 5-16 and free for under 5’s.
Please see me if you need any more information or want to give me details of your exhibits – remember naval boats or subs’ only.

Gordon Longworth – Exhibition Sec.

I know it is not for a few weeks yet, but I have to have all the paperwork to them by 9th Aug.

Gordon

Details will be in Tabs under the header until after the event!.

Fathers Day on Mothering Sunday

Mothering Sunday 30th March 2014.
It was a nice sunny day at the lake and there were quite a few fathers sailing on the day, there was even a light wind to please the yachtsmen later in the day, hope the members remembered what day is was or there would be trouble when they got home.
The video was taken about 11-00am and the first one was Rob Gibb's new lifeboat and there was the champers ready to launch  her on her first sail to the new owner, though he hadn't used Tank type steering before Rob was taking it a bit easy on the speed, but it still looked impressive on the water.
Then it was the turn of Mr Secretary, Andy with his Model Slipway, Kawkab Class Fast patrol boat, he was telling me that the figure on the boat was one he found that used to belong to his son, who has now grown up and is serving in the Army himself and done two tours in Afghanistan, where does the time go and don't they soon grow up and have families of their own.
Last but not least a nice little fishing boat, ideal for the older member who finds it hard to lift the bigger heavier boats in and out of the water, we would all like to have bigger and better boats!, but there again its best to be prudent isn't it and know your limitations.
Here is the video!.

Another nice day in the beautiful setting of our club's venue, I don't think some people realise how lucky we are to have such a nice location to sail in and have a ready made audience to admire your efforts.

Thats all for now, see you down at the lake again.

Yacht sailing at Etherow 31st October 2013.

Yacht sailing at Etherow today, 31st October 2013.
A nice autumn day with the colours in the trees looking wonderful!, the sun was out and the rain stayed off whilst I was there
The usual crowd of sailors today with most of them yachtsmen , check out the video.

This Sunday is the "Judging of boats", which to the newer guys is boats or dioramas made during the past year that members have decided to enter.
There is another chance to enter if you can't make it on Sunday, and that is on the following club night.
The Judges are the winners of last years sections, so they know what to look for, and they are guided by our modeller extraordinaire George Barrett!.

Bob Abell....News at Ten....Haydock Park Model Boat Show 2013

Bob Abell....News at Ten....Haydock Park Model Boat Show 2013

Went to the show, with the Missus, as she likes the horses!......but there was none to be seen, obviously!

We didn't actually go to see the models, this year, as we were on a mission to meet Paul Thomason. Paul is designing a range of easy build launches, which he intends to sell on the ModelBoats Magazine website in aid of charity

The writer has volunteered to build the prototype model and the show was ideal for a progress meeting.

Couple of our members showing interest there Bob!.

The model was placed adjacent to our very nice club stand....Well done, chaps!

Alas we missed meeting each other by 5 minutes!.....Ships passing in the night, springs to mind!

Back to the show....

We enjoyed the show very much. The exhibition was spread over about a dozen halls! They were very, comfy, well lit and nicely arranged, with plenty of space, to stand and stare!

The food counters were very nice, one for bacon butties etc and another was the restaurant type, with cooked meals being served.....and very nice too

There were two portable inflateable pools demonstrating the various model types of models.
Hovercraft put on a spectacular display this year,

There were about twenty club stands and quite a few trade stands, Arthur Barlow made sure the visitors went through the trade stand halls first

Some of the models were of outstanding quality, especially the Russian show stands

We enjoyed meeting up with old friends, Les Jones, Dave Wooley, Arthur Barlow John Dowd and some familiar faces, names of which, lost in time!

Verdict......One of the best shows we've been to, and will definitely be going again, next year!

See you there........Bob Abell

Thanks again for the report Bob, don't know how you do it for the price!.

That's all for now folks, getting squared away after my week in Scotland.

Bank Holiday Monday, May 2013

Was at the lake again to-day to see what was going on there.
Met Donald and Charlie there and Steve Bradbury was sailing his paddler Jeanie Dean's.
Though not many at the lake or the park for that matter it was a pleasant experience only slightly put off by the dull weather and threat of rain.
I did manage to get this video of Steve's paddler, it wasn't until I got home I realised I've got one alreally on YouTube, still as they say you can't have too much of a good thing!.

So that was the end of the Bank Holiday, I think the car parking would have put off a lot of the members who have had bad experiences in the past, still I enjoyed myself and those who went on holiday I hope did too!.
......................................................
Fred got a letter from his wife.
"I missed you last night, come home and let me have another shot"!.

Life begins at 40 they say, but you could miss a lot if you wait until then.

A senior couple were relaxing on the beach on their holiday when the wife jumped up and yelled "Oh my god I've just remembered I left the oven on at home !"
"Don't worry" replied the husband "The house won't burn down I've just remembered I left the bath running".

A typical Thursday at Etherow

The last post was a typical Tuesday, so I thought you should have a look at a typical Thursday at Etherow.
First here is the "Panart Anteo" Tug built by Andy Wagstaff.

Andy saw someone else's model in the club and decided that was his next build and what a good job he's made of it hey!.

Look at those brass parts shining in the sun, yes it was a lovely sunny day and we had a good crowd at the lake.

The next was another nice model, "Jenny B" a fishing boat by Alan Breese, same guy in the last post with the Minesweeper!. A nice detailed boat and very stable in the water.

The next video was of a Metcalfe Mouldings kit built by Eric Baker, who said it was his first build from this company, he kept saying he thought it needed a bit more ballast in the stern but I don't think so, sit's on the water just on the water line.
Has you can see it sails quite nicely as it is.
He also thought it  was going too fast, I said perhaps you could have used geared motors, there again it was the motors recommended by the company when he bought the kit, when he's got it on a decent tranny there might be a better response, it was on one of those cheap trannies with not much play in it, (full on or nothing!) that he'd used just to try it out on the day,
My theory is if it's not broke don't mend it!.
Another nice build though!.

Dave Lee and Trevor Redford on the day got stuck in and made some repairs on the rescue boat that had some holes in the front though a bit of previous rough handling, perhaps a bit of ice breaking over the past hard winter??.
On the way Dave had bought the materials and then they both made the repairs before getting their models out, that's good of them and I'm sure you will all join me thanking them for their splendid efforts and skills in doing it.

They are going to paint it next, trouble is its got to be put away in the water when they go home, can you imagine leaving it out at night?.

The goose is still sat on her nest in the garden, nothing seems to faze her, even with Dave and Trevor's endeavour's just a few feet away, but as you can see from this picture some predator has already tried to get in to the nest.

The two baby Coots a bit further up the lake are doing well
This is mother showing them how to preen themselves.
Sounds of Punch and Judy.
"That's the way to do it"

And a closer shot of the two babies, that's mother laying down on the left, it's a never ending job feeding those two babies I guess.

This Sunday it's Fiesta Racing don't forget, better than pounding up the motorway in the traffic!

Well that's all for to-day's post, must get out whilst the weather holds, and Bank Holiday must bring out more sailors this weekend.

Club Christmas dinner 2012

The Club Christmas dinner was another of this years successes, there were only 21 of us but everyone had a good time and ate everything put before them.
Another big thank you to our Social Sec Mike from all who were there I'm sure.
I  forgot my camera (was in my other jacket) but remembered I had my Iphone so all was not lost, pictures not too good but the lighting was a bit dim, perhaps on purpose so you couldn't see what you were eating, still shouldn't say that has it was all very nice and Pepe liked his doggie bag!.

Though the pix's are not too good you get the general idea of the Christmas spirit I'm sure.

Pepe getting in the Christmas mood as well!, loved the Hare and Hounds turkey.

Don't forget its the AGM on the 12th December, Committee reports, prize giving, raffles and good company, what more could you ask for!
Why don't you bring your money with you for next years sub's, Geoff the treasurer will be in attendance and will be glad to receive your money, save on postage for yourself and the club!, same price as last year, which in this present climate can't be bad.
...........................................................
If I don't see you before Christmas, have a good one and a happy new year.
......................................................................
When everything's coming your way, your in the wrong lane!.

Beauty is in the eye of the beer holder.

I tried sniffing Coke once but the ice cubes got stuck in my nose.
......................................................................................
That 's all for now folks.

J Class sailing at Etherow.

Nice picture Wednesday evening at the lake!, whilst waiting for the clubhouse to open for our meeting the heavens opened and then this rainbow appeared.

Then to-day took this video of our "J" sailors racing.

Well it's the Haydock Show this weekend for most of you, but I'm going away for a few days to Scotland with the family, so thought I'd just post something for you until I get back.

Game for a laugh

Has the title says, just for a laugh to get you into the party spirit.

On to more serious things, if you didn't attend the AGM you won't know of the changes on the committee,  so if you go to the menu at the top, click on Committee members and there they are!.
...............................................................................................................
Go to Church this Sunday and avoid the Christmas rush!

There were actually four wise men. On the way to Bethlehem one said he knew a short cut!

A couple of fattened turkeys were talking in the hen house and one said to the other
"Tell me, Cyril do you believe in Santa Claus?.

That's all folks

Colin's holiday snaps

To-day I thought I would share an E-mail I got from Pam, Colin's good lady , and what a good lady allowing him to pack his yacht instead of a few more frocks! Glad to see you have your priorities right Colin

Dear Peter & Velda
A few pictures of Colin sailing his boat on the big marina lake at Weston Super Mare! not a duck in sight!!!!             Pam

Colin on Holiday

Not a duck in sight!

Weston Super Mare Marina

No wonder you like it there so much you two.

See you back at Etherow with the scoops and brushes, enjoy yourselves.
.........................................................................................................

Fred described the bump on his head as a glancing blow.
"The wife caught me glancing at a blonde" he said.
............................................................................................
Fred was hammering away at some woodwork in his back yard when his mate Charlie looked over the fence.
"Aren't you coming to work to-day?" he asked.
"No said Fred". He had to stay home and mind his wife who was sick with a sore throat and the flu.
Hearing a strange gurgling noise coming from the house Charlie asked; " Is that her coughing?"
"Don't be stupid", said Fred , "she'd never fit into this. she's 15 stone. This is a kennel for the dog"!

 That's all folks
